I have a horrible feeling that I passed a kidney stone yesterday Sad

I have had a mild UTI for about 10 days which I thought would clear up itself but gave up and got some antibiotics from the docs yesterday (too late I suspect).

Yesterday afternoon, I suddenly had the WORST pain in my lower back, stomach, side (basically the whole low left-hand side of my body). It also got worse in one area and then that would ease off and the pain would move to another area. I was also sick a couple of times (but not nauseous).

Eventually, the pain eased off after about 4 hours and I was left with a dull ache in my lower left back which I still have this morning.

I have had gallstones and I would say the pain was on a par with that.

Should I have gone to hospital (I didn't as DH was away and I had the DC by myself)?

Assuming it is that, do I need to do anything now? Will the ache in my left side disappear? How do I know when it has come out in my urine?

I would ring health direct for advice.sorry to hear that you are in so much pain hope you feel better soon.

I have had several kidney stones as well as gallstones so you have my sympathy! If the pain is less this morning you could go to your GP and they can arrange a scan or X ray. If you get the severe pain again then A&E is better, and they will test your urine for blood and do an x ray. The pain goes when the stone passes, so you can keep an eye on the toilet, although some are pretty small and easily missed. Even if the pain goes itself it's still worth going to your GP as there can be other stones lurking. Hope it all settles for you - both kidney and gall stones are v sore!

Forgot to say, drink lots just now. I usually start drinking pints of water the minute the pain starts and have found it helps a lot.

I think you need to be seen by medical professionals.
DS hads kidney stones which passed down to his bladder and were too big to pass any further.
But if you wee one out you will notice it if you look

weegiemum · 14/12/2012 12:23

I'm hopingtohelp.

I had kidney stones in MT pg with ds and (much worse) with dd2

Its very nasty. You can't take the normal anti-inflammatories! I was on pethedine/ morphine/diamorphine it was that sore!!!!

Pm me for more info!

Thanks for the advice - not sure where to go though as I have no chance of getting an appointment with my doctors and don't think it warrants a trip to A&E (and I don't really feel like sitting in the waiting room for hours when I could be in my bed) - so where do I go?? We are rarely ill in this house so I genuinely don't know what to do.

Does it hurt when you wee it out or is all the pain just when it is moving from the kidney to the bladder?

Emummy having had both kidney stones and gall stones - would you say the pain was similar but just in a different part of the body?

I have passed two kidney stones, both tiny and I only noticed them because I went to A & E with acute pain and they asked me to pee in a pot. If I had gone to the loo normally I doubt I would have seen them. If you still have pains I would recommend that you get yourself x-rayed. It's possible that you have more stones which you will either pass naturally or they will treat to break them up. Hope you feel better soon.

Musomathsci · 14/12/2012 12:40

Pain is generally when the stone is moving down the ureter from kidney to bladder. If the pain is easing off, then no need to do anything really urgently, but as others have said, you should get checked out to see if there are any more stones there. Certainly sounds like a bout of renal colic - really nasty pain that typically makes you roll around.

ceebeegeebies · 15/12/2012 11:19

Just a quick update. Went to Urgent Care this morning as I was still in pain (although nowhere near the level of pain on Thursday) so thought I should get it checked out.

One x-ray/urine test later - nothing to worry about Smile No stones in my kidneys now - guess I will never know if it was a kidney stone or not!

Now, as I haven't eaten for 2 days and my appetite has suddenly come back with a vengeance, I am off to McD's for some salty crap Xmas Grin

Well that's good that there is no stone. I had a kidney that was incredably painful to pass. Had a scan about a month later to check all was well and they found another one 4 mm in size in the same kidney. Nothing has yet happened to it, I am hoping it just stays there minding it's own business! Hope you enjoyed your Mcdonald's .

menothappy · 16/12/2012 00:16

Obviously I didn't pass a kidney, it was a stone!!!

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/12/2012 02:56

I had the pain you described plus felt so ill I throw up over my new boyfriends shoes on our think 2/3rd date Blush

Must have forgiven me as 15yrs later we got married :)

I was rushed into hospital and had to wee in a jug and some trainee nurse pour through every wee through a very fine sieve

They didn't ever find anything but I was told that some kidney stones are tiny and not visible to the naked eye but can cause serious pain
