Mrsgee - it's a much more complex operation when they're older. My dh had this done last year when he was thirty and it took him a very long time to recover. He was only a day case though.

If I remember correctly there was a little boy in hospital having had it done when ds2 broke his leg. He was only in over night and then sent home the following day.

Good luck.

My boy was told that he would need to have this done at one point in his life as his hole isnt that big and his foreskin is tight, we were told to roll back each day and he hasnt had an infection since. Will be watching this thread with interest.

mrsgee - my 2 sons were done when they were 3 & 4 approximately.
They didnt have anaesthetic, and it took about 10 minutes. They wore just long shirts with no pants for a few days, but were swimming in the sea about 10 days later.
There are loads of previous MN threads about circumcision, where people describe in detail how its done, but rest assured, you shouldnt be facing a scalpel wielding surgeon.
There's also loads of analysis on MN about the pros and cons of circumcised men, maybe reading some of the past threads would set your mind at rest.

MrsGee - did you get a 2nd opinion from a pead urologist ?I read recently from a leading London based one that nowadays it is extremly unusual to really have to resort to it. Most problems which use to lead (and still do according to this doctor as she feels some docs still resort to it too quickly) to circumcisions and can be sorted in other ways.
I do know of 2 children circumcised (by choice not religious) at 6 months - at least one of the mothers who had another boy afterwards refused to have it done again.

mrs gee, I had my son done when he was 5 weeks old. It's really not a big deal. Its done by local anaesthetic, and took all of about 5-10 minutes. I took him to a qualified GP who sent me home straight afterwards.
There is a certain amount of aftercare involved for the first 12 hours, after which the GP removed the bandages himself. My son was a little bit grumpy on the day of the circumcision, but I promise you, he was back to his normal self by the next day. On the next day, i could touch it and wash him and he was totally unbothered.
It is a little distressing when its actually being done, so if you are worried, ask a trusted family member to sit in with your son so you don't have to watch.
Hope that helps. Best of luck.....

thanks all
i took son to an emergency appointment and was so shocked with what he said that i didnt really ask lots of questionsBlush
dh said he wants a second opinion, we are meant to get a date through to see a specialist.
the whole he wees from is too small and his foreskin will not move this is why he has to have it done.
will keep you all posted but may take a while before we get any news.
thanks againx

The foreskin is attached to the glans at 8 months and may well be until he is 10 years old. He obviously has a problem to be at the emergency doctors in the first place?

cam home same day. had it done under general anesthetic. running round like usual loonies a few hours later whilst i was still having heart palpitations. my boys were 13 and 14 months when they had theres done

HappyMumof2 · 11/04/2006 22:00

Thanks for posting those links Furball. Has made me even more determind to not allow my ds to be circumcised. Have been referred to hospital for second time, first time he was 3 and I refused to allow it.

mrsgee, sorry, but I think your GP is talking crap. How on earth can he tell if an 8 month old needs circumcision??? The foreskin is not meant to retract at that age.........

ruty · 11/04/2006 22:03

i'm confused as as far i know, the foreskin does not roll back until the child is three...

bramblina · 11/04/2006 22:07

When is it meant to retract? My ds is 8 months and I have wondered if it's meant to look like it does, it's quite tight. Our dr is quite thorough though and has 2 boys of her own and didn't pick up on it at the 6wk check so I forgot about it.

HappyMumof2 · 11/04/2006 22:09

ds is nearly 7 and his still doesn't retract. GP is keen to 'have him done' but I'm going to say no. I think it starts to loosen around 3-4 yrs of age normally although can be a lot later

bramblina · 11/04/2006 22:11

Oh hell our ds is in for a rough ride then, dh's balls didn't drop either so if ds inherits all this he's just going to have a, ahem, ball...

HappyMumof2 · 11/04/2006 22:13

ROFL Grin

bramblina · 11/04/2006 22:15

Yeah. Me too. poor soul Blush

mrsgee · 24/04/2006 11:00

had a second opinion and think the first doctor was talking crap and am very annoyed that he tried to pull the foreskinback when have now been told that it shouldnt go backAngry
