Strep C in toddler!

morningpaper · 11/04/2006 19:44

Well I have just got a message from GP saying that toddler's vaginal swab showed "Strep C and mixed anaerobes" (not Strep B as originally informed) and she has given her TWO types of oral antibiotics.

I can't find much about Strep C in vaginas on the internet... anyone help?

Are BOTH a/bs needed... i'ts only been 4 weeks since her last load for something else. AND she was breastfed for nearly 2 years, dammit!

anaerobs mean that there is baceria which thrives in oxygen deprived environments. Strep C is a bacteria which to my knowledge is aerobic, which means oxygen using (though will have to check that!). There is not one type of antibiotic (given orally as an outpatient) that will treat both types of bacteria. Have just answered about strep b in other thread, will have a wee look in the books for you.....
What antibiotic is she on?

aw thanks so much chapsmum

erythromycin and metronidazole

erythromycin would be approprite fo rthe atrep infection and metronidazole for the anerobic one.
few questions if you dont mind?
Is she still scratching, has she had any tummy bugs recently, ?is she potty trained? what were the last antibiotics for?

Cant find an awful lot on strep C as a skin infection.... that does not mean it does not exist, just that my knowledge does not extend that far!!
It does seem to be something you would find in the bowels, if she is still in nappies it is quite possible that it has come from contamination. If this was the case speak to your GP and ask hime if you think it would be neccisarry for her to have a stool sample done.

She is still scratching - says she is hot and itchy down there, both anal area and vaginal area

tummy bugs. she had a bit of the runs on the day the swab was taken (it was vulval so I was concerned at the time about contamiation, she is potty trained but was not very clean!)

Last abs were for a skin infection - her thumb swelled up with yellow pus!

Could all be conected TBH. If she still itchy and hot, you should definately go ahead with both antibs. If they had thought the infection was purely in her ulva, the metronidazole could have been given as a cream. The likely hood is that this is coming from her bowel.
Speak to your GP tommorow and ask him to explain the situation.
Also, when she is finished ask for a stool sample and again speak to your GP about any precautions you should be taking.
It is not uncommon for strep bacteria to re-occur in the bowel so hand hygiene etc will be important.

hope this has been of some help, poor wee soul. You could also oohone and ask for a mild anti itch/cream with some local anathetic in it. AND erythromycin is notorious for causing loose stools so plenty of probiotic yogurts etc!

thanks chapsmum, you are a star!

unfotrunately she lives on bread and water so I can't get any decent food into her (ultra fussy) not even yoghurt

She'll take breastmilk made into hot choc so I might pump a bit of that instead :)

you could take the probiotics and pump, it will improve your BM, Good luck!

strep A and B are more commonly found n the throat, but hink the throat bowl vagina etc are common places to find any kind of step infection.. (although I do stress bug have never been my strong point!)

Hope she feels beter soon.
