Arrgh! damn emergency doctors! (and what have I done? )

Need to tell someone this.

I posted a thread a couple of weeks ago about a weird lump behind dd's ear. I took her to the emergency doctor, who told me it was just a bump, but why don't I give her antibiotics anyway? (she had had a fever, but it has passed)

I bought the antibiotics but didn't give them for a few days as I don't like to give my baby drugs for nothing. It didn't go away so i started giving the antibiotics.

But it's got worse so today i took her to the proper doctor (almost left it till Monday - she is fine so it didn't seem an emergency). I swear everyone was giving me odd looks in the waiting room for having an emergency appt. with such a healthy-looking little girl.

Anyway doc has told me to take her to hosptial today without fail. I would be there now, but she said it was OK to give her a nap first. She's written "mastoiditis" on the form - eeek! that's a v important gland for hearing isn't it? Why didn't I listen to my instincts and take her back to the proper doctor as soon as I could? Why do they bother having emergency out of hours clinics anyway? (this is Spain, so out of hours is any time after 3pm).

The thing that makes me feel better is that she seems fine, but as the doctor said, it's a very dangerous place to have an infection. At least the hospital is the same one where I'll be going to give birth any day now.

hoxtonchick · 10/01/2004 13:39

Hope your dd gets better soon, SP. Hope you're OK too, it must have been scary.

melsy · 10/01/2004 13:50

Sending healthy, caring and get well thoughts xxxxxx

suedonim · 10/01/2004 13:50

Oh my goodness, Sp, that must be scary, having her in IT. Thank goodness you caught it in time, though. I hope she and you are feeling a bit brighter later on today. How long will she be in hospital?

princesspeahead · 10/01/2004 13:52

god sp, I'm so sorry! but glad it all went well. hope you get her home and back to normal soon... well done for taking her back to doc, I probably wouldn't have done if it was just a lump. I shall be checking mine for ear lumps regularly now - never heard of this before!

look after yourself too senora

popsycal · 10/01/2004 13:54

Festivefly · 10/01/2004 14:02

Good Luck, Sp, i'm sure she will be fine and we've all done it. I refused to go into hospital for a whole day and night while i was in labour. When i got there they told me he was ill and i needed a cesarian because i had left it so long. Ooops!
Hope the antibiotics kick in and it all gets better

WideWebWitch · 10/01/2004 14:05

Senora, I really don't think I'd have taken her back either - so glad you did, I've just read this with my heart in my mouth. I'm so glad she's OK, let us know when she's home.

Demented · 10/01/2004 15:23

Senora, only just read this, hugs to you and your DD, hope she is better and back at home soon.

JanH · 10/01/2004 15:31

SenoraP, I am so glad you made it in time - as others have said I wouldn't have done anything sooner either - had never heard of mastoiditis. Take it easy! xxx

Lisa78 · 10/01/2004 15:40

Thank God SP, so glad she is okay
Aren't you expecting any day now? If so, please try and take it easy - easy for me to say I know

Marina · 10/01/2004 20:04

Just caught up with this Senora, you poor things. Sending you all lots of positive vibes and good wishes for speedy recovery. She will get over this more quickly than you will, I bet. And like everyone else who's read this, I will be watching my children's ears a lot more closely from now on. Take care.

Kayleigh · 10/01/2004 20:09

I missed this thread too SP. How terrifying for you all. Poor little mite - hope she makes a speedy recovery, I'm sure she will, little ones bounce back amazingly quickly. Don't feel guilty, I would have done exactly the same thing, I've never heard of this condition. Hope you are OK too - what a time for this to happen. Let us know how she is, when you get chance. (((hugs)))

popsycal · 10/01/2004 22:43

hope SP is ok in terms of being due imminently too....

Chandra · 10/01/2004 23:55

tigermoth · 11/01/2004 08:30

What a scare for you. I have heard of mastoiditis, but didn't realise it used to be so serious. Will check my boys ears from now on. Hope your dd is out of IT now and that your impending birth goes really well.

SenoraPostrophe · 11/01/2004 14:00

Thanks again all.

Mumsnet is great for these kind of situations isn't it? I can't actually talk about it without blubbing - or at least I couldn't, but today dd is just as she always was, only with a bit plaster on her head and a drip (babies and drips really don't mix well).

To those of you now paranoid about lumps on ears: it was enormous by the time I took her back to the doc - you couldn't have missed it. It had pushed her ear right out so it was perpendicular to her head. As I think I said below, it's a complication from an untreated ear infection, which I think they had missed the previous time I took her to the docs. Next time I'll insist on waiting for her normal doctor I think.

She's still at the hospital (with my sister) and I'll be back there soon. I should pack a baby bag really (today being my due date), but I just can't bring myself to do that yet! (let's hope ds is a bit late)
