Third bone fracture in 2 years

OMG forgive this post, it might be a bit muddled, but I am still in shock.

My ds1 (aged 9, nearly 10) has today broken a bone for the third time in 2 years. His first fracture was suspiciously severe and needed surgery to correct it but drs thought maybe he was just unlucky.

Second break was quite mild and occurred 10 months later. Drs again thought he was maybe unlucky. Both those breaks were on his lower left arm.

Today he broke his upper right arm and apparently it is another severe break. He was swinging on a monkey run and fell from it - not a very spectacular fall and certainly the sort of fall kids do every day, yet my ds has broken his arm.

He is attending a clinic on Saturday where obviously things will be discussed in depth, but I just feel three breaks in 2 years in a child who is not adventurous or dare devil (in fact rather timid and wimpy) is just too many now to not warrant further investigation.

My parents are drs and have suggested he might have a mild form of brittle bones (osteogenesis imperfecta). Does anyone know about this or can anyone reassure me that this isn't devastating news? Sad

ahh ddg
Way back when one of my ex's hd twin cousins who had quite severe brittle bone disease, they both excelled at school, did uni and live happy lives
They did have to be very careful when growing up.
I hope your ds os ok, my ds broke his upper left arm and was in agony....
Will they do a bone density test?
FWIw my ds had a very mild fall backwards and put his left arm out to land on - and that cracked the bone right through, he'd never suffered before.
Good luck

A girl in my class at high school had a mild form of brittle bone disease - I only recall one fracture during the 7 years of schooling (she broke her elbow during a swimming lesson). I haven't kept in touch with her, but she seemed to have a perfectly good life, went off to study dentistry at Uni IIRC.

Thanks for the reply. All of ds's fractures occurred when he was doing nothing very much IYSWIM. You could say he is extrememly unlucky, but I don't know.... three times? In two years?

I have until Saturday when his clinic appt is to find out as much as I can about whatever could be causing this, so I will google bone density tests (thanks for that info)

Thanks Italian Job. It has already occurred to me that ds1 may have to stay off the contact sports at school, but he won't find that a sacrifice!

So sorry to hear this DG. Poor DS1. Do all you can to be informed for when you go to the clinic on Saturday. As you say though, maybe he is just unlucky. He is growing after all and children's bones are put under strain from time to time. Try not to panic, but be prepared in case they do suggest more tests.

Stay in touch and keep us all posted as to how he does. Try to get some rest tonight.
