Does anyone know anything about this?

DS has had a cold, runny nose for about 2 weeks now. We had him to out of hours doctor last week as he was complaining of pain in his ear. The doctors said there was no infection but he did have a lot of wax in his ear and just advised giving him calpol.

4 days later he's still bunged up, his nose is all bloody and sore and now his ear is leaking a really smelly offensive fluid and he keeps saying he can hear noises, does anyone know what this could be? He also seems quite deaf and I have to repeat things to him. I have got him for the doctors again tonight but am quite worried, he's not poorly and eating fine but am scared he's going to lose his hearing or something.

probably an ear infection. Should be ok with antibiotics - should be ok to take him to the GP later today.

OddOneOut · 10/04/2006 11:54

it sounds like he has an ear infection, he also obviously has an infection inside his nose, the noises he can hear are probably tinnitus from the ear infection.
i suspect his ear drum has perforated from the infection, or the infection could be in the canal, get him to the doctors asap, tbh, if he had a lot of wax in his ear, the gp probably wouldnt have been able to see his ear drum properly at the time anyway.

just noticed you have appt later, should be ok to hold on till then.

Thanks Throckenholt. He had an ear infection at beginning of Feb and had high temp so thats why I wasn't too worried as he hasn't been poorly this time but he just keeps getting these horrible infections.

crazydazy - does he keep getting ear infections? Have you had him checked for glue ear?

crazydazy · 10/04/2006 12:00

Thanks Oddoneout for that, my GP said they only have urgent appointments and so I have got him in, although its not urgent I feel like he needs to be seen today, he's just not getting rid of it and I feel so sorry for him.

Yes might get him checked for that as there is always something in his ear and it always needs cleaning.

Am worried now about his ear perforating, won't that be painful for him? This happened to my Mum and she could never go swimming because of the pain.

poor little thing as poppies said, if he gets repeated infections, ask for an ent referral for him.

OddOneOut · 10/04/2006 12:04

its not unusual foe childrens ears to perferote with an infection, they actually feel a little better as the pressure is released, it will heal though, but if he has a perforation hed be advised to avoid having his ears syringed in the future,it may not have perforated though.

crazydazy · 10/04/2006 12:04

We have been to ENT as he had his tonsils and adenoids out because he had problems with his ears, they thought this would help but it hasn't.

There is so many ear problems in my family though, my uncle is deaf in one ear so I am always worried.

def ask for a referral back then, i have dredaful problems with ear infections etc as do my 2 boys, we are all under the ent specialist, although the boys have been ok for a while.

crazydazy · 10/04/2006 12:10

Yes I have always had problems with my ears and DP come to think of it. I cannot hear as well in one of my ears too.

Will ask about it when I take him tonight, thanks again everyone, very much appreciated.
