Can chicken pox be this mild? What is it if it's not the pox?

DS1 has 16 spots - some on his upper arm, the rest on his back. He first had a handful (about 7 spots) on Friday night, the rest have appeared since.

He doesn't get spots, his skin is usually very clear and smooth (tending towards being a little bit dry).

He's been out of sorts and grumpy, but not seemed horribly ill.

The spots are quite small and look a bit like early stage chicken pox, but shouldn't he have more by now and shouldn't they be starting to change? A couple of the older ones look like they're getting better - not scabbing, just going.

Has he just got teenage skin now he's two?

I should take him to the doctor tomorrow, shouldn't I?

Ds was the same Hunker. He's now happily picking at scabs but he only had about 20 spots so it can be very mild.
And he only had a fever and slightly off his food but that was it.

LIZS · 09/04/2006 20:51

dd didn't have loads but some were quite nasty and have scarred Sad

hunkermunker · 09/04/2006 20:51

DS1 hasn't had a fever and he's not off his food at all - and this is the boy who cuts teeth with a 41 degree fever, so I'm quite surprised that he's not got a temp... Just puzzled.

No I don't think you should. Yes he can chicken pox as mild as that but what would the doctor be able to do? I tried to get an appt with my doc when DD had the pox at 5 months and was very poorly and utterly miserable (and exclusively breastfed!) but he wouldn't see her. Spoke to me over the phone to discuss the possibility of giving her neurofen under the 6 month age limit and that was it.

I seem to remember my brother having the pox very mildly. Dd has had a similar thing recently though and I thought it was mild chicken pox - turned out to be impetigo! Best to check if so as she needed antibiotics to clear it.

spidermama · 09/04/2006 21:15

My 1 year old ds had a similarly mild version. It was so mild I was wondering how I could be sure it was CP.

dinny · 09/04/2006 21:16

Hi, Hunker Smile I wouldn't bother going to GP if he's well in himself. Even if it is chicken pox there's no need for GP - all they'll say is Calpol and bicarb of soda in the bath.

if it's mild cp, he may well get it more than once.

spidermama · 09/04/2006 21:17

I also wondered if antibodies in breastmilk might have helped him process it quickly. Are you still feeding your ds1 Hunker? What do you think of that theory?
(It didn't work for my ds2 who had a worse case of CP whilst still bf-ing.)

georginarf · 09/04/2006 21:18

I had CP aged 9 weeks and according to my mother had about 10 spots in total (still have the scar from one though!). That's the only time I ever got it - so yes, it's possible to have it very mildly

hulababy · 09/04/2006 21:21

DD had chicken pox pretty mildly and was in no way poorly with it at all. She had a little itchy -nothing major - and piriton sorted that out. I remember poting on Mn about me and Dh going to a ball the day after she got them and getting lots of comments about not going, etc. But we did go and she was so well.

Bozza · 09/04/2006 21:28

spidermama - same with us. DD caught it off DS and I definitely had pox as a child (was at junior school so remember it) but she had a far worse case than DS.

hunkermunker · 09/04/2006 21:32

Not still feeding him, but have given him EBM a couple of times.

Could it be measles...hmm?

My dds had chicken pox aged 2 and 3, and they weren't at all poorly with it (though they itched a bit). If you give him piriton and daub him with camomile and keep an eye on his temperature, then that should be fine.

dinny · 09/04/2006 21:40

you around on MSN, Hunker?

hunkermunker · 09/04/2006 21:45

Can't tonight, Dinny - makes me go to bed far too late if I log on...no willpower and DH has rigged the pc to turn off at 10.30 now Blush Grin Tomorrow?

If they get it mildly they can get it again [voice of doom]
