So I have PID (again). How has this happened?

Usual cause is unprotected sex. I know damn sure no-one else has been in there except my husband....which leaves me doubting him! Even the doctor didn't believe there was no "other activity" Blush

Help! What are the chances there could be another cause?

Isn't pelvic inflammatory disease something that follows on from Chlamydia etc?

In which case I'd always imagined it was something you could develop after initial infection with the primary STI iyswim, not something that happened instantly when you were exposed to it.

And in that case could it just be a recurrence?

Sorry, I'm probably talking rubbish but that was my understanding of it.

From the NHS website:

Other causes

Sometimes, the infection that leads to PID may start as a result of bacteria introduced into the vagina or upper genital tract during childbirth, an abortion or miscarriage, or a procedure to take a sample of tissue from the inside of the womb (endometrial biopsy).

In rare cases, PID can develop as a result of appendicitis, treatment following an abnormal cervical smear test or after the fitting of an intrauterine device (IUD).

In some cases, the cause of the infection that leads to PID is unknown. Such cases may be the result of normally harmless bacteria found in the vagina. These bacteria can sometimes get past the cervix and into the reproductive organs. Although harmless to the vagina, these types of bacteria can cause infection in other parts of the body. Infection in this way is most likely to happen when there has been damage to the cervix, or if you have had PID before.

OP I get PID even when I haven't had sex.

It's not just to do with sex, mine was due to a termination and once you've had it it comes back.

I had my appendix out 2 years ago and have suffered intermittent bouts of PID ever since. I've never (knowingly) had an STI and have never been treated for one. Been fine for a few months so I don't understand why it's happening again. And I'm a clean person!

Do you ever get BV? I'm sure mines something to do with that to. I have never had a STd, they even ran blood tests to check for clamidia but zilch and yet it keeps coming back.

Chocolateporridge · 30/11/2012 19:58

I was told that I had PID which came and went 3 times. I had scans, internal examinations etc until I found out I had IBS and my symptoms were the same pain as PID. The treatment for IBS really helped.

happyfanjo · 30/11/2012 19:58

What is BV? Bit dense here (I'm still at work and it's been a long day!)

Bacterial vaginoses its a inbalance of good and bad bacteria.

happyfanjo · 30/11/2012 20:12

Thanks for all the answers. Might have to get the IBS looked into cos I do have other symptoms more in line with IBS rather than PID. Glad to hear it's not just a result of unprotected sex

InNeedOfBrandy - sounds like too many antibiotics could trigger it off by upsetting the balance? Hmmm, got a few questions for my GP before swallowing yet more pills.....
