Lump in breast

Nance · 07/01/2002 10:41

I noticed a lump in my breast just before Christmas. As I am still breastfeeding I dismissed it as a blocked ducked or something similar and assumed it would disappear after a few days of warm compress etc. No such luck. I finally saw the GP last week and have been referred to a surgeon. As you can imagine,I am extremely anxious and even went private to speed up the process so will see the surgeon this coming Wednesday (as opposed to seeing someone at an NHS hospital in two weeks time). Has anyone had to go through this before? I have felt the lump so often that I am no longer sure of it has changed from its original size but it does seem to be slightly smaller (but still there!!).

Nance, sorry to hear your news. I hope this eases your concerns a little.
I discovered a lump in my breast when my first son was born. Like you I thought it might be a blocked milk duct, but my doctor referred me for a check up at the hospital. The consultant thought it was non-malignant, but I was given the option of having it removed and I took it. The operation was fairly painless - just local anaesthetic - and I went home by taxi shortly afterwards - had to be accompanied by a friend.

The lump was found to be non-malignant, and I was able to breast feed on using both breasts before and after the operation. Breast feeding wasn't any more painful or difficult, though my milk supply was slightly reduced because the surgeon had removed a few milk ducts from the affected breast. Also, my breast milk kept wetting the stitches so the small incision took longer to heal that normal.

I hope this helps.

Nance, I have had lumps twice - once was benign (a fibroidenoma (sp?) also known as a breast mouse) and once wasn't. Breastfeeding wasn't involved either time though.
Good luck. Fingers crossed.

Thanx Janh & Tigermoth. Fingers crossed it will come to nothing.

Will keep you posted.

Dear Nance
Have you been to hospital yet and do you have any results. Please let us know as we are all thinking of you and wishing you all the best.

Dear All

Sorry for not responding sooner but our PC at home was down!! I am happy to report that the lump in my breast was nothing more than fluid collecting in an areola duct and the body should absorb it all naturally given time. Apparently they occur naturally but usually only appear deep down in the breast itself so cannot be felt. Mine were/are in the areola area so appear on the surface. I have scan pictures to confirm!! I must admit, I WAS worried!!

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND THOUGHTS!

I LOVE the World!!

That's fantastic news, Nance. You must be soooo relieved. Good to hear it was all checked out so quickly, too.

Oh, good, that is a relief, Nance. I am glad!

TigerMoth1 · 14/01/2002 12:26

One less worry, then! Glad you're OK, Nance.

I too had a small lump in my right breast about 4 years ago. My doctor felt it and then a mammogram picked up on it. I was scared out of my mind but I had surgery and it was benign. Try not to worry about it too much. Most lumps are usually not cancerous. I feel like I have lumps in my breasts all the time.
