I had mine last week after putting it off although I shouldn't because I had abnormal cells removed 5 years ago :(
You seem to be getting your results quickly I was told 6-8 weeks although it could be quicker because of my history

Carmenere · 07/04/2006 12:08

Had it done today, I'm very relieved and it wasn't too bad really. Smile I deliberately diddn't look at the thing and that helped. Really for all of us who have had babies it's nothing in comparison.

suzywong · 07/04/2006 12:08

Argh Just realised that I still haven't sorted this. It's overdue by about a year..

bakedpotato · 07/04/2006 12:21

Had it this week, thanks for asking.
006, please tell me how to tilt a posterior cervix, I've got one and it takes forever for the lovely nurse to locate and sometimes it all feels a bit All Creatures Great and Small (think James Herriott with arm up some poor beast).
Anything that could cut down on all this fannying about so to speak would be good.

JonesTheSteam · 07/04/2006 12:27

Mine is booked for the middle of April.

The smear I had after having DS showed 'abnormality', so I'm supposed to having them every six months for eighteen months. Have only had one so far which was clear, but that was over a year ago, so am sort of up-to-date, but not really, IYSWIM!!!

blueshoes · 07/04/2006 12:47

put it off for ages.... really was not that bad at all and while i wont look forward to my next one it wont bother me that much either Wink

Rhubarb · 09/04/2006 16:46

Not had one for, oooooh, 3 years?
Oops!
When we move back to the UK I'll register with a nice gentle doctor who can do it for me. But I need reminding!!!

alittlebitshy · 09/04/2006 16:47

{blush] no. I've never had one. I know that's v v v bad. but so so scared. Was awful when having examinations when pg with dd (once i tensed up so much that dr got hand stuck, how embarrassing is that?!) so scared of having it done. got to the point that drs sending me a letter v regularly, and i know i need to but can't get courage.

alittlebitshy · 09/04/2006 16:48

Blush was how it should have started.

Rhubarb · 09/04/2006 16:53

It is difficult, but half the problem is how you feel about it all. Can you not get your partner to practise putting his finger up there? You have to relax, (very hard to do I know!). The thought of it is worse than the reality. It is very quick, takes about 30 secs. You can see your nurse, explain your worries and maybe she'll do a few practice runs with you first?

alittlebitshy · 09/04/2006 17:06

that short, really??

call me dense, but can someone explain how they do it????

Blush now!

littlemissbossy · 09/04/2006 17:15

I had one recently and got all the all clear last week.

For anyone who is shy/embarrassed/scared about having a smear test - GO - it takes just a few minutes and can be life saving.

We have a close friend who is bringing up 3 children on his own having lost his partner to cervical cancer at 29!!! and all because she'd always been too scared to have a smear test until the day she started bleeding heavily and ended up at the A&E in pain... she was dead 18 months later after ungoing major surgery and chemo. Yes it does happen and it can happen to you too! If you've managed child birth, having a smear test should be a walk in the park!

shorty3 · 09/04/2006 17:32

Yes - have them every year, I had an abnormal cell removed a couple of years ago (24 then).

I used to bug a frIend to go all the time then when she eventually did she had cancerous cells at 22 year old. Luckily it was not too advanced and she needed operation to remove.

Still nag work colleagues and friends now.

Going today 3.20 I am already thinking far too much about it.If i am made to feel like a freak this time i will complain-I will!

Rhubarb · 12/04/2006 12:27

alittlebitshy - they lay you down on your back, obviously!! They get you to relax before they do anything, then a little metal instrument is inserted just in the entrance to your vagina, just to keep it propped open, that feels a bit cold but nothing else. Then the nurse takes a swab using a flat wooden stick, and that's it! It's all over!

What you should do is lie there and count slowly to 60, keeping your breathing even and concentrating on your counting. Once you have got to 60, it will be over.
