Scan of lymph nodes tomorrow, worried about possible Hodgkins

I am due to have an ultrasound tomorrow morning of the lymph nodes in my neck after I found a lump on my left supraclavicular lymph node (I should never have googled this as it comes up with lots of lymphoma discussion). I also have some of the symptoms of hodgkins lymphoma (sweating, unexplained high temperature, pain on drinking alcohol, anaemia etc) so I'm worried.

My rational brain tells me the chances are low and I shouldn't symptom spot and worry, but it's there in the back of my mind and has been getting worse every day I get nearer the scan - although I'm looking forward to the scan as it means I may know what is going on.

Has anyone else gone through this and can offer their story good or bad? I'm keeping a brave face on it because the DCs pick up on things and worry when I'm not well, but I'm concerned.

Just to offer some reassurance, my mum had what sounds similar to this last year. She had a lump on her neck which was pretty much constant, although sometimes was more noticeable than other.

She spent months going back and forward to the dr, getting various antibiotics etc, but nothing ever helped. Like you she also had high temps on and off and it seemed to get worse after drinking alcohol. One of her worse flair ups was after a few glasses of wine at DD's birthday. But she was feeling pretty rough for months.

Eventually after a new lump appearing on her chest (sort of above her breast in another lymph node area) she was finally sent for a scan and then a biopsy. Like you we both done a lot of googling and were really concerned, as let's face it, google is always worse case scenario Smile

Anyway, it turned out to be a viral infection in her lymph node and nothing serious at all, and she was told it would just have to run it's course and eventually it has completely cleared up. She was also advised to have her thyroid checked as apparently this can also cause similar symptoms.

Hope all goes well with your scan, and I know it's easier said than done, but try to stay away from google, no good ever comes from it! Smile

Thanks Crocodile - I hope mine turns out to be the same. I have had about 10 months of viruses and infections and at least 15 lots of antibiotics since February for throat and ear infections. I hope that it all turns out to be linked to the same viral stuff. Maybe tomorrow will be good then to put my mind at rest.

Glad your mum is better and I'll try and stay away from Google, but I'm of the knowledge is power ethos as an academic so I need thorough retraining :)

I totally understand why you need to arm yourself with as much knowledge as you can, I am exactly the same, even this morning I came home from the Dr with new tablets and the first thing I did was google side effects then convinced myself I had them all Wink

My mum was exactly the same, was treated for ear infections, throat infections, tonsillitis, and various other ENT related things, but she never felt that anything really helped and she just felt so run down and awful, I suppose looking back as if it was viral, the anti-biotics wouldn't have done any good.

Hopefully tomorrow you will be a bit further forward and know more about what is going on.

Tests and waiting are the scariest time (and stay away from dr google- there is a reason we go to hospital Wink).

There are two hand holding threads in general health- one is for those awaiting tests and results and the other is the tamoxifen one which is for those who are or have been treated for cancer (not just breast).

As others have said it is quite likely to be something else (symptoms of lymphoma etc are very generic). But in the event that it is something nasty there are plenty of us to offer support Advice and Wine and prove that scary though it is there is life with and after cancer. I repeat though that it is unlikely to be that.

Good luck tomorrow .

Thank you. I've had a busy afternoon teaching which has helped and found myself thinking that it's highly likely not to be anything serious, but I will stop dwelling on I now and start planning what to do afterwards to make myself feel better. Thank you

Hope all goes well. You may not get any results or answers today.

Good luck for today. eight I was been tested for lymphoma 3 years ago, with the same symptoms as you, infact I was having all the symptoms of lymphoma. It turned out to be lymphadenitis. The sweating that I was having was due to an overactive thyroid, not lymph node related.

EightToSixer · 27/11/2012 12:28

Thanks everyone. Scan was very thorough tested all my lymph nodes above the chest, all nodes are swollen and I have a benign growth on the supraclavicular node that they want to keep an eye on for growth but Santa concern. They are going to keep an eye on the swollen nodes and temperature though as I've pretty much had repeat ENT infections and viruses since February and nodes are swelling in response to that. But it isn't lymphoma so that's a huge relief. Thank you all.
