HELP! what can I take to sedate myself before I have my wisdom tooth out?

I'm having my wisdom tooth out in a couple of weeks. It's growing sideways (does that mean it's impacted?) also the root tip is in the sinus, so lots of stitches.
Stupidly - because I would have had to wait longer for the appointment - I elected not to have a sedative, but now that it's imminent I'm really anxious. Is there anything I can take which will relax me? Over the counter would be best, but I could probably squeeze in a visit to the GP to get a prescription. I was going to take neurofen plus & Bach's resuce rememdies, but have a feeling this would be like taking paracetemol & aromatherapy candles onto the labour ward.... Sad

i'd be careful about what you take... make sure that it won't interfere with any anaesthetic injections the dentist will give you to numb your mouth

ooh, I had two widsom teeth out without sedation. not painful, just a lot of force!

I did take Rescue Remedy but don't think it did much.

Good luck!

Starlover: yes, that's one of my concerns. I was hoping there might be a dentist lurking somewhere on the messageboard...

no tips for sedative I'm afraid, but I would suggest you take an ipod / walkman, with some relaxing music so you can distract yourself from the tugging - it worked for me when I had a root canal! Good luck.

dentists can prescribe a sedative for you so you know its OK - they can give you diazepam I think.

Clove oil is good for reducing pain but you should seek advice from your dentist. I had a sideways growing wisdom tooth and it took a bit of time coming out - no way could I have had it removed without any pain relief. I also had an impacted wisdom tooth this is when the tooth is partly exposed but mostly covered by the gum.

Oh, I'm having a local! ( Shock at having it out with no pain relief) It's just that I'll be a tense, gibbering wreck.

you can have a clove dressing inserted in the gum (by the dentist obviously)
