easter egg hunt - how can I keep it from turning into a choco fest?

My visiting relatives want an easter egg hunt for their kids (6 and 20 mo). Fine, but I haven't given my 20 mo old choc yet and really didn't ever intend to. Yesterday I bought fluffy ducks and less eastery gifts, spent way too much to make up for fact I don't intend to do a lot of chocolate. I don't really want to do any chocolate but feel pressured into it already. Any suggestions?

DD will get one (or maybe two actually) chocolate eggs this Easter. I have persuades granparents and her aunties/uncles (bar one who is allowed!) to get alternatives - such as books. PILs have got her some Doodl shoes :)

All about moderation for us.

fennel · 06/04/2006 13:12

you could use real eggs, hard boiled. and eat them after

i suppose one could do a real rabbit hunt and eat them too but that might be going a bit far.

just been on a Woodcraft folk easter egg hunt. it's all non-competitive. we hunted (fair trade eggs of course) and then shared out the spoils. shame, as dd1 and i had got the most and had to share them all out.

We place carrot sticks ( cling film ) in the garden then the kids have to find them, they can then either exchange the carrot stick for a mini egg or eat the carrot stick.
Prize to the one who collects the most carrot sticks.
Seems to work OK for us and the kids love it .... a bit of competition for the older ones and everyone gets something!

My Mum always used to colour boiled eggs and stick little chick transfers on. These were hidden in the garden and we used to get a basket to collect them in. I think she used to put a few chocolate ones out as well but I can't remember those, just the lovely coloured ones.

My kids are so deprived, they have no idea that Easter (in Britain, esp) is supposed to be a chocolate binge. They are 6, 4 & almost 2, btw, you CAN do it.

DH & I have always hidden/scoffed/given away the chocolate eggs given by other relatives... did I say what big meanies we are to deprive the kids so? I think this is the first year I will let the 6yo & 4yo have their chockie eggs from Granny... plus they'll be ordered to A) share with parents/little brother and B) ration themselves, not allowed to eat it all at once.

I am trying to organise an American style easter egg hunt using hard-boiled eggs (dyed & painted by the kids) and paper chicks to find, plus just a few chocolate bits.

milquetoast · 06/04/2006 15:44

would love to use real eggs but DD is allergic.

styrofoam eggs? Dd coloured them at preschool.

SparklyGothKat · 06/04/2006 15:51

what about \link{http://www.elc.co.uk/toy-40406\these??}

moondog · 06/04/2006 15:52

My dd has had an egg for the first time this year. She's 5.
I have confiscated the crap and bought her a Fair Trade Green & Black number that she can eat on Easter day.

If I wanted to do a chocolate-free or low chocolate easter hunt, I'd buy loads of those tiny, fluffy chicks to hide, and the children could win a little cuddly bunny or something similar, by finding the chicks.

Rinkydinkypink · 04/04/2017 13:10

Put tasks in plastic eggs. For example dance like a chicken. Count to ten with a mouth full of water etc. Once all collected the person who puts in the most effort gets an egg or Easter gift.

Rinkydinkypink · 04/04/2017 13:11

Everyone gets something btw

I wonder if the OP's child is a raving chocoholic now!

smilingsarahb · 04/04/2017 14:40

I don't really see why your friends can't do a chocolate hunt at their own home on another day if it makes you uncomfortable.

I also don't see an issue with hunting fluffy chicks and cut out eggs, then coming in and doing a craft or having a snack.

Is it just chocolate that's an issue or is it raisins, grapes, biscuits etc. Would a bunny shaped biscuit be an ok prize?

shewolfmum · 04/04/2017 23:49

Awww..i think good chocolate is healthier than hot cross buns! Get some good organic eggs...
