My mother (66) is due to fly on Saturday morning, but went to the dr yesterday morning and is on a strong anti-b, steroids, and an inhaler, for a doozy of a chest infection she picked up a while ago.

She's to go back to the dr on Friday evening to see can she fly safely (it's a trip to Disneyland Paris, she's taking my sister and my niece).

Any non medication related tips for her - should she sleep propped up, stay out of bed during the day, go out and get fresh air (damp but not cold here), stay in nice centrally heated house, inhale steam from a sink of hot water and Olbas oil?

She doesn't feel too sick in herself, but would hate to miss the trip.

she needs to rest, eat what she can manage and not resist the urge to cough

it's very tempting to supress the cough but she needs to get the gunge out (not nice but needs must)

As someone who's had more than a few serious chest infections, usually treated with anti-bs I'd say steaming is good, rest but with a bit of fresh air is good so long as it's not too cold - really cold air sets me off with terrible coughing fits, sleeping propped up will help, taking the inhaler and drugs as instructed is very important - even if she's feeling better keep taking the inhalers as prescribed. IME the anti-bs will start to kick in in about 48 hours so she should be feeling much better by Saturday.

Thanks a mill all. Dsis just rang, suggesting that if DM can't go, and they can't change the date, that I go instead....

Don't worry I'll still tell DM the above!!! I do want her to get better!

Friars Balsam, you put it into boiling water and inhale it.

There is nothing like it for shifting crap off your chest, and I've had enough chest infections to know.

It will stain whatever you put it into but boiling water and washing up liquid will remove it.

Just a quick update, DM is on the mend but the trip has been postponed to Feb.

At least they hadn't told my niece yet so no disappointment to deal with, and she will be that little bit older in Feb so will enjoy it even more.

Thank you all for those tips (I'll be keeping a note of them for the future!)
