What is living inside me, and how can I kill it?! (TMI warning)

Last night I went for a wee before bed and when I wiped I noticed a black, inch long, 'thing' on the paper. It was very thin, and I thought it was a hair, but a very thick one. I looked a bit closer and one end sort of reared up a little, so I'm sure it was a living creature. At that point I flushed it down the loo in panic!

I thought it might mean I had general 'worms' but when I googled about them it said they are white. This was black.

Today I inspected the paper after wiping and there were a couple of shorter thin things that looked lighter in colour. If I hadn't seen the black moving thing the night before I would have presumed they were just little bits of hair, but now I don't know.

Does anyone have any idea what this is and how I can get rid of any more that might be in me?!

I do have 3 cats, so don't know if it's some kind of creature caught from them? I do always wash my hands before eating and after cleaning their litter tray etc. But I don't always wash after every single time I stroke one of them. And I admit, they do often sleep on my bed.

Any ideas? And will I have to go to the dr? I hate going to doctors about 'embarrassing' inflictions!

Thanks

My friend spent a year in Africa and returned 18 months ago. Two weeks ago she passed a 28cm live earthworm type creature. She reckons it was just about measurable. Strong drugs sorted it, but eurgh.

TheAccidentalExhibitionist - did you have exactly the same thing as me? I.e a black skinny worm thing? Did you have to show any body areas/samples to the GP or was your explanation enough to get a prescription?

I was helping at an event all this morning and early afternoon, so it was about 3pm before I could get to my local chemist for ovex and it was shut! I couldn't be bothered to walk to the main shopping area to go to Boots. I wish I had now!

I did dose my cats up on worming syrup though. I thought about taking a big glug myself but thought it might not be good for humans!

In laws had been staying with us. MIL found a large worm at the bottom of the toilet bowl after going. She fished it out and took it to the GP. The said it was roundworm. There are 60plus different types but basically parasites living in your digestive tract but can lay eggs elsewhere. DH then found them and so did I, looked like a earthworm.

We were given Flubendazol from the doctor, all of us took it including my DS. Doctor just laughed and wrote us a script, they definitely didnt want to see it.

We also took Ovex, just I'm case, but that is for threadworm. We wormed all our pets and have stopped the dogs from licking us.

BTW it totally freaked us all out and I've told no-one in real life.

We live abroad, not Africa and I believe it's extremely common in warmer countries.

Are chemists open on Sunday? I mean, I know Boots will be, but will the pharmacist bit be open? Or is ovex something you can get off the shelf?

The pharmacist bit will be open and they'll give you ovex.

Ovex is for threadworm. They are little tiny white worms. Its available over the counter.

This sounds like roundworm as it's much bigger. OP you need a prescription from the GP.

Lougle · 18/11/2012 08:25

Ovex is mebendazole, used for treating threadworms. You take one tablet as a single dose.

For roundworms, you take it twice a day for 3 days

This thread is reminding me of that show an animal planet "monsters inside me". You have no idea the things that can lurk inside us! Get to the GP!!!!

Accidental I have to admit that the first time I read this thread I thought you said you got them "from your skanky PANTS" rather than PETS.

I apologise for the dreadful thoughts that went through my head! Grin

You know whenever someone talks about nits, you automatically start scratching your head? Well, I'm now doing the worms equivalent of that Hmm
