Does thrush on bottom lead to thrush in mouth and get passed on to me in breastfeeding?

DD has had nappy rash recently (previous 9m hardly any), it seems to be coming and going but people (incl. Dr) said it was not too bad. This evening when we put her to bed, there was a white patch, obviously sore etc. Is this thrush and if so, what do you recommend - have looked through archives and I'm thinking I'll just try Canestan and see how that goes for a day or two. Is it inevitable that it will get passed on to me when breastfeeding?

Thanks

We have recently had thrush and ds's bottom had open blisters rather than white spots? What have you put on it so far, might it be bacterial rather than fungal?

If it is thrush you will both need to be treated, dd with oral gel/drops and canestan and you with cream for your nipples and possibly drops.

When she had the odd bit of redness, we have used Sudocreme but we mentioned to Dr the other day that it had been more sore and he looked at it and said it wasn't thrush but would prescribe something if we wanted it, so we were given Metanium nappy rash ointment, which I've used for the past 24hrs. As there was this white "rash" we decided it was best not to put anything on overnight and try to find out what it might be, in case it was a reaction to the ointment.

So thrush is blisters etc? It certainly isn't like that - it looks like white mould (urgh!)

As long as you wash your hands thoroughly after nappy changes you should be fine. If she had oral thrush i would say yes. But not thrush on her bottom.

racers, I had the same concerns with my DD. I was convinced that after seeing thrush on her bottom that we'd both need to be treated. My HV backed me up but when I went to see the GP I was just given canestan for her. Used the entire tube, thrush still there. I saw a different GP who repeated the cream. They are very reluctant to give you antifungals as they are very powerful & erm, very expensive! My DDs thrush went after the 2nd tube. There is info about it on the kellymom website. There are other measures you can take such as taking acidophilous tablets and/or those live yoghurts. Also, apply white vinegar to your nipples after each feed, thrush cannot live in an acidic environment. Obviously you need to wash it off before the next feed. HTH.

Thanks vvv(whatever) - sorry couldn't resist, PMSL when I saw you change your name the other day Grin

and thanks achovies and Karmamother. I'll have a look on kellymom and will ask about the acidophilous tabs at the pharmacist tomorrow. I'll check with the pharmacist but would you say that Canestan is ok to use even though I'm not exactly sure what it is? It's just that I can get to the pharmacy and use the cream much more quickly than if I was to try to get an appointment with the GP!

Its the same stuff your gp will prescribe. Its basically an antifungal cream & is safe for babies. Just apply a thin layer. I was told to apply it 2-3 times a day. You can apply nappy cream on top of it. What also helped us was ensuring her skin was dry before putting cream on. Thrush loves moist warm areas so allow some nappy free time too. Once we got rid of it I started using metanium at night which kept it at bay.

Sorry, I didn't make that at all clear - I mean I don't know what the white stuff on her bottom is, so is Canestan still safe. Sorry, I know that read as though I didn't know what Canestan is Blush

Years ago a friend of DH's told me that she'd appied Deep Heat to herself instead of Canestan LOL! Luckily she could see the funny side as I was PMSL Grin

Thrush looks red with white spots. I'll see if I can find a website with pictures for you.

Racers · 03/04/2006 21:52

Thanks, I've looked but not found anything yet.

Not for the faint hearted but this page has a picture of skin thrush. Scroll down to picture 8. Is the best example I could find. \link{twww.emedicine.com/DERM/topic67.htm\here}

Racers · 03/04/2006 22:12

Can you get a quick gp appointment? I'm sure if you say its for your baby you can get to see them pronto. Just say your baby is very distressed & sore.

Racers · 03/04/2006 22:15

Yes, I think I'd best phone them in the morning. Thanks for all your help!

good luck with the receptionist.Wink

eidsvold · 04/04/2006 01:22

not sure if you can get it in the UK but we use something called daktozin nappy creme - fabulous for treating bad nappy rash or thrush.

Racers · 04/04/2006 09:39

thanks eidsvold, I'll look out for it.

The white bits have gone this morning and now I'm wondering if DH's theory could be right ie that it might have been bits of nappy stuck onto the ointment?! It really didn't look like that though. It's still sore but I don't feel it is urgent to be seen. I have an appointment on Thursday (double one for me), so I'll discuss it with the Dr then, I think.
Thanks again, all.
