Cortisone injections

Anyone had cortisone injections into a joint?

I have to have four shortly and was wondering if they are sore and do they cause any flare-ups of inflammation.

Had to have an MRI Scan with dye and it was agony afterwards for 24 hours and was wondering if it would be the same

Hi Smile

I haven't had them, but I used to work in a joint injection clinic. They mix the cortistone with a local anaesthetic, so you should feel wonderful afterwards (and shouldn't be sore). They are not the same as the MRI dye, it's a very different liquid. I've not heard of anyone who's condition has flared up, so hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge about this will come along soon.

I've had a few over the years (suffer from an arthritic condition) but never more than one at a time. Sometimes the area injected can be a bit sore for 24 hours but once that's faded its always miles better and any pain/inflammation goes away completely. They've always worked for me.

I have them quite frequently. I shall be honest with you because that is what I would want.

I have them in to the front of my pelvis under GA. He puts in multiple injections to give me the maximum relief. On the day he does it, it is nice because the area is numb so I actually manage to get some sleep. It takes the edge off my pain, for a maximum of about 2 weeks.

I, also, have them done into my Sacroilliac joints. The ones I had done in April caused a massive flare up of pain. Some doctors will admit that the injections can cause a flare up, others will try to make out you are mad! Again, they don't work for long on me, and just take the edge off the pain.

FIL has them done on his knee. He gets really, really good results. He hobbles in and walks out relatively pain free. His last for about 4 months. I guess it is like everything, some people have better experiences than others.

Thanks for this

Need two in each hip. Am hoping they will work as its either this, tramadol or an operation.

Not looking forward to it at all.

As they are mixed with a anaesthetic, ill need someone to come with me to drive me home won't I?

They are only mixed with a local (lignocaine usually). It would help if you took some painkillers before the injection though. I'd get someone to drive you home as well, as you will need to rest for a while afterwards.

Yes you probably will. Mine tend to work for the long term because the arthritis causes a temporary flare up so by the time the cortisone has worn off the flare up has passed. So if yours is a permanent thing it will definitely not last forever, as Elletow says, a few months later you will be having them again. Sorry not to have made this clearer in my post. Hope it works for you.

MsElleTow · 14/11/2012 21:44

Yes you will need some one to drive you home. I always feel really, really tired after, probably because I worry about it before, then it is about of relief after.

I've had them in my hip. The local stings about, but the injections aren't really painful, more uncomfortable. It is like a build up of pressure when they put the steroid in, but it is short lived.

Good luck, you'll be fine.Smile

Well I've had the first 2 injections and am having a flare up.

Am in agony. Not as bad as MRI but more constant. Sore too sit but it lessens on walking.

Hoping it wears off soon but it's been 24 hours now. So am waiting patiently
