7 Year Old With Squint

about 3 years ago my son had an operation on his eye to correct a squint, afterwards he was supposed to wear glasses and keep appointments to see the orphoptist.

Anyway, he did wear the glasses for around a year and went to a few orphoptist apointments but after a while they stopped sending for him and my son started playing up about wearing his glasses meaning they got used less and less.

The thing is though, his eye did seem straight and the squint appeared to had gone with or without the glasses and after a while Im ashamed to say I forgot about the whole thing (not completely but I stopped worrying about it!) as his eyes were straight and he seemed fine.

Now he's 7 and has just come back from his dads and I have noticed that his eyes are starting to develop a squint again...Ive noticed for the past few weeks really that it seemed to be creeping back but today it looked really noticable

At 7 can they do anything to correct a squint? I'm sure the surgeon told me that 7 was the eldest that the vision could be helped Have I left it too late? I feel terrible tonight and I just know that the orphoptists...when I take him back are going to think I'm a terrible mother.

Any advice welcome.

Noodlegirl, it's most likely that he is still longsighted. The effort he has to put into focussing can cause the eye to turn in but I would think wearing glasses should straighten it again, though the "turning" eye may be amblyopic or "lazy". I have seen some success with children over the age of 7, I have often seen children who were referred quite late and there was still improvement. I would advise you to get an appointment as soon as you can to have him re-assessed. No-one will think you are a terrible mother, lots of children refuse to wear patches/glasses and there's sometimes not a lot parents can do!
