what can be causing my baby's rash?

Hi. My 8 week old baby has had a rash for 3 weeks. At first I thought it was milk spots but it's got progressively worse. He's not ill with it at all and it doesn't seem to itch or cause him discomfort. Two days ago, the doctor thought it might be excema and prescribed E45 for a few days and then a very mild steroid cream if that didn't work. But the rash seems to have got worse with the E45 - redder and more like a rash, less like individual spots.

I always thought excema was red, dry, flaky skin? This is a pure rash and his skin isn't that dry.

Any ideas?

I had an excema type rash and E45 made that redder too. Oilatum also made DS2s skin go redder almost immediately. Aqueous cream worked fine for both me and DS2 who had excema type rashes behind his knees. Something else that worked like a dream was Kamillosan nipple cream.

Can't help with what it might be though.

Thanks soupdragon.

Oh, and it's all over his face/head and shoulders and a little down his chest and back. Is that typical for excema?

Hi,

We are currently dealing with the same problem, with our 1 year old. We have excluded dairy, changed washing powder, and are trying various creams (including some Chinese Herbal Medicine). We also think hard water could be a factor. Will let you know what works for us. Good luck - you have our sympathies, as we know what the worries are like.

Thanks Auster. Sorry dinosaur, what's TCM? I think i'm going to just leave it alone until the damage done by the E45 has gone. Then I'll think again. Did anyone see a dermatologist?

I am allergic to E45 and aqueous cream too. Unguentum cream prescribed by gp (it has no steroid in it) finally cured my ds's excema.

when my dd gets a rash i use the weleda homepathic cream with calendula, dont know if it does anything but it supposingly sooths.
my doctor told me, upon her first trip to him with a rash, that they get lots of rashes and really do not fret. so thats i did,
hope thats not too flippant!
dd presently has a rash on her chin which i cant get rid of.
