DS who is 17mths has fallen and hit his forehead on the corner of the table. It sounded quite hard and hes got a slighlty raised bump about the size of a 10 pence piece maybe a little bit smaller. It was coming up for his naptime so i think he just got a bit clumsy and fell.Anyway after crying out loud for 3/4mins its wiped him out so he is fast asleep in my arms. So i cant really say if hes unwell etc.Im a bad mummy cus i havent got round to sorting out those corner cushion covers as they kept falling off so i never bothered to replace them :( I dont know what to do should i just keep an eye on him and see how he is when he wakes up or should i take a&e as precaution?

take him to a and e as a precaution. you will feel better if you have done that.

MamaG · 31/03/2006 14:23

CAn you pop down to your GP?

Rhubarb · 31/03/2006 14:23

Tough one, normally I'd said no probs, mine has a knobbly one he's hit it that often! But it's hard to say if yours has just fallen asleep because he's tired or because of the fall. What's your gut instinct telling you? Can you waken him if you tried?

my dd was sitting on the counter at the bank one day and she slipped and fell headfirst onto the floor Blush

i took her to the health centre (which was just next door) and i explained to the receptionist what had happened and she took me through to see the nurse straight away. dd was fine, the nurse checked her eyes to see if she had a head injury and gave me a leaflet of things to watch for, vomiting etc

im sure if you took her to gp or whatever they would check her over, and you might feel a bit less worried too

Rhubarb · 31/03/2006 14:27

If I took ds every time he hit his head, we'd have our own rooms there!

Try to rouse him, if you can't then pop into your Health Centre. Go with your gut feeling.

I know when my ds has had a bad bump to his head, nhs direct said to check to make sure that there is no clear discharge from his nose of ears. Hope he is ok.

alison222 · 31/03/2006 14:33

If he seems at all dazed or confused or not focussing properly when he looks at you when he wakes up, or vomits within 24 hours he may have concussion.
If so take him to A&E
If you are really worried try to wake him now and se how he is (other than cross at not getting a nap)

mum2sam · 31/03/2006 14:34

Hes really grumpy if i try to wake him hes cut down on his daytime naps and so when he does go to sleep which is around this time he generally is out for the count anyway. Apart from being sick or drowsy is there anything else i should look for. Th bump looks like it has gone down a little but i can still feel it slightly. Does it matter where abouts on the head they hit either?

Headaches, but it will be hard for him to tell you that. Give him just as long as he would normally have for a nap and then see how he is, see if he can follow your finger around with his eyes, see if he is able to stay alert.

It's probably nothing, they do this all the time!

Chapsmum · 31/03/2006 14:50

oh the wee monkey, what are they like???
if he was not knocked out at the time and otherwise seems well, no vomiting, not off balance (rest of info on NHS 24 sight) he is probably fine.

And contrary to popular belief it is very normal for a wee one to be tiered following a head injury and it is ok to let them sleep. I would keep tickling his toes every so often to make sure he is rousable.
Calpol fo the pain
and a and e if your worried anything

mum2sam · 31/03/2006 14:51

He just looks mighty grumpy when i try to wake him. I think i will just let him sleep and see how he is. Hes hit his head before and has been fine but cus i didnt see it this time and only heard it it always sounds worse.

It makes you wonder though how hard some of these evil people hit their babies heads to cause serious injury. It was in our local paper a few mths ago about a womens boyfriend who smackded her babies head against a wall because he wouldnt stop crying. The baby died a few days later Sad

That is a horrible thought.
have seen some horrible things happen to babies. It is a terrible crime.

hope your wee one is ok, just keep tickling his toes to make sure he is rousable and remeber if you are worried a and e would rather re-assure a worried mother than deal with a potentially sick baby.
Am sure he will be fine though
