What's the best over the counter decongestant?

I know it's not a great idea and that it's all part of your immune system and whatever. But I would just like ONE night where I sleep, one night where I don't feel like I'm drowning in my own snot (sorry if that's TMI). Any recommends for a magic breath easy tablet I can take tonight and have 8 hours perfect breathing, just so I can remember what it was like? Please?

Oh meant to say, Sudafed seems to do f-all and gives me insomnia so probably counter productive...

Mucron

Agree Mucron is great. But if you are having sinus problems, I find Vicks spray unbelievable. Works almost immediately and lasts all night.

I prefer the old fashioned way - Menthol crystals in a bowl of hot water. Put a towel over your head and steam it out. I make mine really strong and put on the kids swimming goggles. Look a right prat but it does the job!

Mucron looks like it has the same active ingredient as Sudafed, so likely to have me bouncing off the ceiling in the early hours too :(

Is the Vicks thing a nasal spray? I've got olbas oil currently by my bed but not doing a great deal of good - I assume using both at the same time is a bad idea anyway?

Otrivine nasal spray is the only thing that gave me a decent night's sleep - the tablet decongestants just kept me awake and didnt properly clear my nose. The spray is the one thing I'm missing now I'm pregnant and very snotty!

foxinsocks · 30/03/2006 18:38

nurofen sinus is quite good

Seona1973 · 30/03/2006 19:23

I second the otrivine nasal spray - works fast and for longer than the vicks spray. I am another one having to avoid it due to pregnancy which is a pain!! If you use albas oil, the best thing to do is put some drops on a tissue and stick it in your pillow case. It makes it closer to your nose and may be more effective.

Polgara2 · 30/03/2006 20:50

I usually have the olbas oil on a tissue by my head, some Vicks rubbed into my throat and go to sleep propped up. Doesn't magically go away but I do sleep a bit better!

Sudafed gives me insomnia too (it's one of the side effects IIRC).

I use Vicks Sinex Micromist (active ingredient oxymetalozine). Also use steam (hot shower before bed and/or humidifier in room.
