Tongue Tie - Any advice?

My baby was diagnosed with tongue tie at birth. I managed to breast feed for 6 months. He started choking very easily on solids at 4 months and he had almost no mobility of his tongue. The GP said he had a very tight tongue tie on the tip of the tongue and we were referred to the hospital. During the long wait for an appointment I think he ripped it a few times by accident. By the time we saw the doctor at 11 months feeding was no longer a problem. He suggested we leave it another 3 months. We saw a doctor yesterday and it appears to have loosened a bit more. My son can just about touch his lip with his tongue. We have to go back in 12 months. Has anyone had a similar situation? Would you have it cut? The anaesthetic risk is tiny as the operation is just a few minutes. The doctor said it might cause speech problems, although there has been no research in this area. I heard of a girl who was having tongue tie cut at 14 because she couldn't kiss! Can it cause any other problems?

MumtoBen, my brother had a tongue tie way back in the 70's and my Mum chose to have it cut when he was three as it was causing speech difficulties. I suppose it does depend on the tightness though. I haven't heard of any research, would NHS direct have anything about it on their web site? May be worth just googling it and seeing what comes up. Sorry if this isn't a lot of help but hopefully this will bump your thread and someone with more recent experience will be along.
