At what age is it common to start experiencing growing pains? DD (4) was complaining of pains in her shins this pm (gave calpol and it has settled) no other syptoms. Could it be growing pains or is she too young?

I don't know but my DD has occasionally complained of pains in her legs and she is 5....I was never sure if they really existed or were an urban myth!!

Dd started having them at around 4.5.

Does anyone know if it is common for an almost 9yr old to get them. My ds1 has been complaining about pains for about 3wks now on and off. It started in his legs but has now moved to his back. At first I thought he may have hurt himself playing football or doing karate but it hasnt gone away yet. I dont want to take him to the dr's if it is growing pains but then again I may leave it and it could be something else. My friends dd1 had been getting a few pains (she's the same age) and she was told it was fluid on the hips and some other illness that may mean she will be put in a full body cast if it doesnt improve so you can see why i am a bit worried. i know some children do suffer with growing pains but as ds1 is my oldest i have no experience of it. Any advice welcome.

Sorry for hijacking your thread CHICagoMUM, i was about to start my own on this subject when i saw yours, hope you dont mind. Hope your dd is ok.

as far as I know anyone can experience growing pains while they are having a growth spurt, whether they are 4 or 14 yr.

I have always found (both as a mum and in our health shop) that a calcium/magnesium supplement (either in tablet or tasteless powder) always works. Even if they drink loads of milk or eat loads of other dairy, the cal/mag usually helps.

Thanks for that advice Gloworm, I'll head down to our local health shop tomorrow. No problem for the highjack pebblemum.

God I used to really suffer as a kid from growing pains. They are not an urban myth i used to cry myself to sleep with them. My gran used to make me have a glass of milk and a cheese sandwich to make them go away. Not sure if she was trying to give me calcium or just using diversion tacticsWink
