Possibly urgent. Kids have been swilling calpol. What to do.

I've just found the bottle of Calpol for 6 plus open. They climbed up into the cupboard and managed to open the so-called child proof lid.

It was about three quarters full. Now it's about 1/4 full (so half a bottle has gone) and they've admitted it was my four year old and my 7 year old who've had it.

Do I need to do anything? Is this dangerous?

TIA.

Aw, Spider, you have been having a rotten time. You deserve a large glass of something nice. And your dh has to spoil you when he comes back, given you've bravely held it all together on your own.

kid · 30/03/2006 21:35

Sounds like a nightmare. At least the blood tests came back clear. I'm surpised they made you wait that long. My intention is always to let the kids misbehave so the DR will see me quicker just to get rid of us!

Hope the CP is mild and not too itchy.

spidermama · 30/03/2006 21:39

Thanks girls. I'm on my thrid glass of 'something nice' edam as it goes.

One more thing (since I'm on a sympathy roll), guess what I found crumpled and sodden in the shoolbags of both my primary aged children this afternoon? Notes saying, 'Don't forget it's Easter Bonnet day tomorrow. There'll be prizes for the best home made bonnets'.

Great! Angry

I'm sure there will be other children that won't make one. Always the case at DD's school.

CHICagoMUM · 30/03/2006 21:46

Pleased to hear that the children are ok (from the calpol incident at least). When is dh back home? If I where you I'd treat myself to a luxurious soak in the bath then off to bed to soothe those frayed nerves.

crazydazy · 30/03/2006 21:54

I thought you had to keep calpol in the fridge? This is where I keep it but after reading this thread think I will transfer it to the medicine box on the top shelf as DS has a liking to calpol.

Chapsmum · 30/03/2006 22:52

Aww spidy you are having a hard time of it aren't you.
I think you should not make the bonnets but make your wee one explain to teacher in front of the class why!!
that is the best medicine. Although they will probably all go home and try it.

Have a wee dram on me and I hope you feel better soon

Bloody hell, Spidey - really sorry to hear all this - you've been having a right time of it. You must be at your wits end. When is DH coming back?

Erm, is the one who got this bottle down the selfsame star of the recent 'haircutgate'?

pjv · 20/11/2007 08:33

Hi there, i have a similar concern, i accidently gave my 5 and a half month old son 5 5ml doses of calpol in 24hours. Hes had the horrible cold for the past few days. I only realised in the evening yesterday and im so worried, my husband thinks im panicing over nothing but i guess thats what mums do just need a little advice. Will he be ok? what should i do?

aDadGoneMad · 20/11/2007 08:43

Am I right in saying that for a child that age (ie over 3 months?), the labelling says 0.5 to 1 x 5ml spoonful and up to 4 times in 24 hours?

And you have given 5 doses in 24 hours? That doesn't sound serious to me - remember on the labelling they have to err on the side of caution and consider that it might be used on a child in the lowest centile weight-wise. (In hospital they work out the dose by weight, so the chances are you are well within safe limits.

If you want to set your mind at rest, call NHS direct, and i am fairly confident they will do their calculations and tell you that isn't too high a dose. Call them - you probably wont get peace of mind until you have spoken to a professional if you are worried.

belgo · 20/11/2007 08:45

I agree with adadgonemad. I wouldn't worry too much - I would just not give any more calpol for the next couple of days.

pjv · 20/11/2007 08:47

Thanks so much for the reasurance. Im a first time mum and these things are pretty scary. much love PJV

aDadGoneMad · 20/11/2007 08:52

Hope your DS gets over his cold soon!

SquiffyonSnowballs · 20/11/2007 16:57

FWIW in future you may prefer to alternate between calpol and childrens ibubrufen.

I prefer not to do this myslef because I can't personally tolerate ibubrufen and don't want to risk it with my DC's in case they have similar intolerance, but my Dr recommended that as a way of keeping baby comfortable when poorly, rather than religiously waiting for the 6 hours to be up before dosing.

SquiffyonSnowballs · 20/11/2007 16:58

Oh I should add that I am not sure at what age you can give babies/toddlers ibubrufen, so you might want to check before buying!
