i am in the throes of a terrible head cold. nose is streaming and stinging constantly, now bright red and sore.

head feels like its stuffed with cotton wool and my entire face aches. i feel as if i have been punched in the nose. I feel very tired.

i am taking Lemsips (even though i hate them).....and have night nurse for bed. I have no idea what else is out there, if you know of anything better please post it! im desperate!

A hot bath, steaming the face, olvas oil & nose spray decongestant.

Take a cold & flu tablet as the anti histamine will dry up the nose.

Use ultra balm tissues.

cardamomginger · 21/10/2012 16:31

Hot water bottle, blanket, comfort TV and a LARGE whisky (leave the bottle, thanks).

Peppermintcrumb · 21/10/2012 18:36

Pour equal parts port and brandy into a teacup, zap in a microwave, drink before you go to bed. Kills 99% of colds!

VikingLady · 21/10/2012 18:41

Like Peppermintcrumb a hot toddy, but ginger wine, brandy/whisky and orange juice. Fab.

Foshizzle · 21/10/2012 18:46

If you have a raw, sore throat, gargle with diluted TCP. Try not to vomit. It's minging but it works.

womblingalong · 21/10/2012 19:49

This is really good for making you feel better, and guaranteed nicer than lemsip! Grate some fesh ginger and pour boiling water over it, and let it infuse. pour the infused liquid into a mug and top ip with the juice of half a lemon and honey to ttaste. Zap in the microwave to make sure it is hot if needed. Ginger is antiseptic and anti viral it will help your throat and nose. The lemon is for vit C and honey to soothe throat. Take a cold/flu tablet or paracetamol with it. Get better soon!

NightingaleSong · 21/10/2012 20:30

I take Vicks first defence at the first sign of a cold, and it rarely develops. Used to get colds all the time and now hardly ever. But you have to take it early and use it a few times. Sorry thats no help to you now, but maybe next time...

Minimammoth · 21/10/2012 20:34

Hot toddy: whiskey, hot water, honey, cloves.

alistron1 · 22/10/2012 12:26

My DP has a fab hot toddy recipe; whisky, honey, fresh lemon juice and hot water.

Drink 2 of those before bed and you don't care about your symptoms anymore.

Failing that, I have found lemsip and an antihistamine before bed to be effective.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/10/2012 12:34

This Sinus rinseit's a bit gross but the relief is worth it.

Sore throats - gargle with soluble aspirin in lukewarm water.

KentuckyFriedChildren · 22/10/2012 12:54

Taking vit c doesn't prevent colds it only helps them to go quicker if you take it during.
Boil a good sized chunk of ginger cut up with two cloves if garlic for about 10 mins and then pour over a peppermint teabag. Infuse and add honey if you like.
I use baby wipes instead of those balsam tissues as its cheaper.
Hot compress on your face (flannel or similar) will relieve the pain and blockage in your face.
I have a liver condition and am not allowed any decongestants or cold/flu type meds so this is what I do.

KentuckyFriedChildren · 22/10/2012 12:55

Oh and a gargle with salt water is good for sore throats (although boak-worthy)

lilyliz · 22/10/2012 19:01

a hot curry does it for me,unblocks my nose and makes me feel better

runzombierun · 22/10/2012 19:13

Vit C, like a 1000mg
lots of fluids, pref water
hot tea and lemon + honey, try to avoid milky drinks, i find them cloying in my mouth
whatever cold/flu tabs you like and can tolerate, I use brufen 8 hrly and paractemol with caffeine in (paracetamol plu) 4 hrly
Night nurse tabs at night! they knock me out so I can get some much needed rest
yy to a decent curry
sore throat lozenge/tunes cherry flavour (sweeties!)/FFriend if you like them (yuck)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/10/2012 19:39

I will sit and join you on the snotty sofa :( woke up with a very sore throat in the night. Thought it was going to be a throat infection but I'm getting snottier and snottier.

Balls.

Manukamama · 22/10/2012 21:16

Good to hear you are feeling better! Hopefully it doesn't strike again, but if it does you could try a natural remedy- Lane's Sage and Garlic Catarrh Remedy from Napiers. You can get it online if you dont live in Edinburgh.
www.napiers.net/sage-garlic-catarrh-remedy.html
Its a traditional herbal remedy for the relief of colds, nasal and bronchial catarrh, and to soothe chesty coughs. The three active ingredients, sage, licorice and garlic combine to give a wellrounded attack with antiviral, antibacterial and anti-infective properties. It also alleviates cold symptoms: decongests the sinus, expels catarrh and mucous, and soothes inflamed tissues.
I found this remedy made the catarrh and mucous literally stream out, it really clears you out. It does have an acquired taste though, because of the garlic. But you can follow it with a teaspoon of manuka honey Smile
You could also try Napiers sinus rub cream, my partner uses it to relieve sinus congestion and pressure caused by hayfever, but would work for colds too.
