Wisdom teeth

Just been told by dentist that I have a wisdom tooth coming through that has to be removed and that he will refer me to the hospital. Dentist doesn't speak very good english so didn't really get much other information from him. Iam bit worried about what it means and what it will involve - has anyone else had to have a wisdom tooth removed?

Not wisdom teeth but i did have one removed at the front of my mouth about a year ago to have my brace fitted and it wasnt too bad. Bled lots, bit swollen but not too bad.

I did under local anaesthetic at a dental hospital. I dreaded and dreaded. But it was OK, quite quick, not nearly as bad as I d feared. Had brusing and swelling on face after and took pain killers for day or two. But if you leave it you may end up with it impacting on other teeth which is what happened to me and I lost tooth next to wisdom tooth as a consequence.

i had my two top wisdom teeth removed at the dentist, just a simple extraction. they had come through completely when it was done though.

Hi Marie12

I have had all 4 of mine removed. They were all impacted and starting to affect my other teeth.I had them out with local anasthetic(sp) at my dentists.I found it pretty sore afterwards tbh but make sure you have plenty really strong painkillers and rest up if you can.You will be fine and it's better to get them out i think.HTH

Did any of you have to stay in hospital or were you able to go home same day - that is what I am most worried about, with a 10 month old DS.

take arnica tablets before and after

ask about a clove dressing being put in the wound

how much it hurts after depends on the tooth and the root

I had both my wisdom teeth taken out at the dentist with local anaesthetic. They were both fully erupted and were at a funny angle and causing me some real grief. I felt the relief more or less immediately as the teeth came out as they had been making my mouth incredibly sore. I was personally delighted to get the little buggers out. I had no bruising, just a little soreness but I think that if you have to have an incision in your gum then you may get a little facial swelling and some bruising, it all depends. Make sure that you are fully prepared with painkillers and try not to get too worked up about it, its really not as bad as you might think.

CHICagoMUM · 31/03/2006 20:53

Is it a top or bottom wisdom tooth (that makes a world of difference)? Second the arnica option. Referral to the hospital means to the oral surgery department in a hospital rather than a need for you to be in hospital, so it is usually still under local anaesthetic (unless you are being referred for a phobia or a medical condition) so a few hours at most. A dressing shouldn't be necessary initially (as long as you follow the instructions given etc it should heal up ok).. But again .... arnica (it makes a huge difference).

Thanks all! I await the dreaded letter from the hospital now!

I had all 4 of mine out under general anaesthetic about 15 years ago.

I went in as a day patient.

It hurt a bit for the first day or so and was quite tricky to talk!

Yorkiegirl · 31/03/2006 23:27

I've had 2 out and am having the third out on 2nd May. first two done at the dentist's, and the third will be too.

CarolinaMoon · 31/03/2006 23:32

my bottom wisdom teeth are really dodgy, only partially erupted and at funny angles. Am expecting them to go truly bad any day now.

The thing that worries me about having them out is the slurping, squelching thhhhhyyyyyuuuukkkk noise that having teeth pulled must create - if you're under local anaesthetic, you'd hear it all wouldn't you?

Tommy · 31/03/2006 23:35

I had all 4 taken out some years ago now - in hospital under a general. Had to stay in overnight and was quite swollen for a few days but once that was gone, the difference was incredible - I could actually open my mouth without it hurting!

QE2 · 31/03/2006 23:38

Yes I had 3 impacted wisdom teeth extracted about 12 years ago. For some reason I only ever had three, god knows what happened to the 4th!

Was under GA, over very quickly and home that afternoon. Very painful for the first couple of days.

Marue - you'll be fine, honest!

Skribble · 01/04/2006 00:11

I had 2 removed under sedation, one was only half out from the gum. Sedation centre specialised in big girls blouses. I was hardly aware they had done it as I fell asleep. Went home straight after, you need an understanding freind or partner that won't mind you drooling and acting a little pissed.

louise35 · 01/04/2006 14:13

Carolinamoon, yes you dear hear a strange noise, mainly scraping, cracking noise as the dentist usually has to push on the tooth a little to loosen it. I could not remember any squelshy suction noises though. Its really not that bad so try not to get too worked up about it. Like I said in my other post, my mouth was so sore with the teeth in that it was sheer bliss to get them out and I mean I really did feel the relief immediately. I had never had teeth out before I had my wisdom teeth done and now I've had it done going to the dentist now does not bother me one little bit. I'd choose having tooth extracted over a filling any day and I've spoken to many people who've said just the same. Take care, Louise.

CarolinaMooncup · 01/04/2006 17:02

cheers Louise Smile.

I've never even had a filling (though my teeth are wonky and crap) so I'm a bit unnerved at the thought of having anything more than a scale and polish Blush.

aprilgirl1 · 01/04/2006 17:13
