What causes scarlet cheeks?

Dd has (yet another) bug - mild D & V, off her food, headache, sore throat, nasty cough - but over the last day or two her cheeks have been hot and bright scarlet. Just part of the bug, do you think, or something else? No spots or anything anywhere else, just the scarlet cheeks. I'm not particularly concerned, just wondering what it could be. She'll be 5 in May.

slapped cheek syndrome
roseacea
virus
all possibilities
wishing your dd a speedy recovery:)

LIZS · 27/03/2006 11:05

Could it be Slapped Cheek/Fifth disease or alternatively Scarlet Fever, has her throat been swabbed for Strep ?

jmum6 · 27/03/2006 11:05

Sounds like slap check which is parvo virus, harmless enough except it's miserable for adults - lots of pain in wrists and other joints. Also not good for pregnant ladies.

Thanks, DSW ... I guess I'd like to know because I don't want to take her out anywhere and infect anyone else if she's got something like slapped cheek.

Oh ... pain in the joints, jmum6? She was complaining about her wrists hurting her yesterday.

Bum.

wwb slapped cheek is usually accompanied with a lacy looking rash esp on wrists

WigWamBam · 27/03/2006 11:08

I thought it was meant to be a lacy rash - her cheeks are just bright scarlet, and there's no other rash anywhere else.

OP posts:
LIZS · 27/03/2006 11:15

But the lacy rash can be feint and can come and go. On ds it looked sort of light purple on his body but didn't appear at the same time as the red cheeks.

WigWamBam · 27/03/2006 11:15

She's asleep on the sofa at the minute, just had a quick look and there's still no other rash anywhere.

I guess it might just be part of the virus she's got ... problem is we had to take her to the emergency GP at the hospital on Saturday with what turned out to be thrush and a vaginal infection, so if she's got something nasty then we will probably have passed it on to people who are pretty unwell anyway.

Yes pain in joints but especially wrists. I had it a couple of years ago and wrists were really painful - had to get dp to do everything - every cloud and all that :o

WigWamBam · 27/03/2006 11:20

I didn't think anything of it when she said her wrists hurt her yesterday - bad mummy moment, obviously!

I assume she doesn't need a doctor, if that's what it is.

Could be roseola WWB. My ds1 had it, and one of my other children (Oh dear, I have forgotten which) has had slapped cheek syndrome so I know the difference IYSWIM.

When ds1 had roseola, he had a whopping high temperature (unlike him) was sick on movement and then the rash on his face appeared. Mind you, when the rash appeared, he felt better, so maybe this is not what your dd has....

WigWamBam · 27/03/2006 11:29

Just googled roseola, DG, but don't think it's that - she's only had a slightly raised temperature, and it suggests that roseola usually starts with a really high one.

Maybe it's just one of those things. I guess if it's something rashy she's not infectious now anyway?

WigWamBam · 27/03/2006 12:30

Well, as she now has a lacy rash on her hands, feet and bottom I'm assuming it's slapped cheek. Just what she needs on top of thrush ...

desperateSCOUSEwife · 27/03/2006 12:33

wwb hope the little mite gets better swiftly:)

WigWamBam · 27/03/2006 12:43

Thank you. It's just been one bug after another since Christmas; it's barely been a fortnight since the last one! Poor little soul, she must wonder when she's going to feel properly well again.

thias weather always brings out the bugs and viros
horrrid for the kiddies

EvesMama · 27/03/2006 12:49

a girl from my dd's ballet class had scarlet fever this week!
very high temp, red cheeks, but also small clusters of spots on her body.
this isnt a common illness and was thougt to be contained years ago, so they've had to alert someone about it.
it took about a week to clear up im told

WigWamBam · 27/03/2006 12:50

Crikey, I thought scarlet fever died out ages ago ...

OP posts:
EvesMama · 27/03/2006 12:52

yeah thats what i thought when she told me?!, but doc confirmed it?!

Tinker · 27/03/2006 13:41

Gosh wwb, your daughter sounds like she's living a parallel life with mine atm re being ill. Same illnesses at teh same times, by teh sounds of it. Think you have to tell school if it is slapped cheek - we usually get a letter about it a couple of times a year

WigWamBam · 27/03/2006 14:07

Tinker, I did wonder whether I ought to let the school know. I'm convinced that's what it is; the red cheeks are redder than ever and it looks like a couple of hand-prints across her face now.

Mind you, as she must have picked it up from school she's probably not the only one who has it, so they may already know.
