Anyone with Hyperthyroidism here ?

I have just been diagnosed with this after weeks of thinking I had a virus. The GP was excellent and spoke to the hospital getting all the correct drugs, but told me very little about how this is going to affect my life ( 3 pre school children, and a SAHM) I also have a heart rate of 155bmp,and am on beta blockers to slow this down.My Thyroid is going too fast and producing >95 T4 hormone.
Feeling exhausted one minute and hyper/anxious the next, and wanted to know how long does this last, and whether anyone has had problems with it.
Hope someone can help me, as Im very confused !!

I had this years ago but I was treated with radio-iodine. I don't know if they still do that? It kills off a certain amount of your thyroid but, in a percentage of cases, they kill off too much and you end up hypothyroid which I am now. I know at the time I was hot all the time, heart rate was as you said and I was losing weight at an alarming rate. I got it treated pretty quickly because it is considered a serious condition. Have you been referred to an endocrinologist?

I had this as a child (rare in kids apparently) so from 9 to 18 I was on carbimazole. I had a heart murmur and high blood pressure so was admitted to hospital for a month to correct all that but afterwards, once they got the dose right I was okay. Came off the pills at 18 and it seemed to have righted itself but then at about 25 it came back. I know exactly how you feel. I was hot and sweaty, barely slept, had shallow breathing and major mood swings. Hope you get on the drugs necessary soon and you will soon feel better. Feel free to CAT me if you want to chat about it more.

Thanks for getting back! I'm seeing a cardiologist next week for an ECG, Then having my blood retested in 5 weeks time. I've been put on beta blockers for my heart and tablets to lower the T4 levels.I just feel so rough at the moment, and it has come as a shock, and has all been quite depressing, as Ive been told I can't breastfeed anymore :(.
I just want to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and look forward to feeling normal again!
Nice to know I'm not the only person to have it !!
Thank you

You will feel better very soon, sounds like you are being looked after. Overactive is, from experience, easier to correct that underactive.

Downside is you have to pay for your prescriptions for over not for under - work that out....

All the best.

I had this condition 12 years ago and took carbimazole for approximately 18 months. Try not to worry, now that you are on the correct drugs you will be monitored closely and should start to feel better within a matter of weeks. It shouldn't affect your life long-term, once your levels are under control you should be able to come off the drugs and all will be ok again.

Just one word of warning though, the thyroid is one of the hormones that regulates metabolism. It is likely that the drugs you take to regulate your thyroid will cause you to gain weight, just be careful what you eat and this weight gain won't be too signifficant, but if you've been eating loads lately because of the condition then you should be aware that you shouldn't continue to eat loads because your body won't burn it off as quickly as it has been doing.

good luck, and feel free to Cat me if you want to talk about it x
