My baby is 8 weeks old tomorrow and having his very first jabs, poor thing. Anyone any advice for me?

Get Calpol just in case. Don't beat the person with the injection when the baby start crying and don't vacinate if he has a fever...

willow2 · 30/12/2003 09:32

Our practice nurse advised giving calpol half an hour before the injection.

Hopefully you will get a good practise nurse (mine was great - the Dr, on the other hand, who did the third was bloody awful - ds went ballistic). She was so fast he didn't really have time to register what was going on. Watch out for the second booster - thats where the body usually kicks in big time!

alohappychristmas · 30/12/2003 13:21

Agree with the Calpol - also if you are breast feeding feed during the injections - it acts as a natural painkiller and soothes the baby quickly afterwards. If you aren't then a dummy has a similar painkilling effect. All babies react differently. Ds went a bit ballistic after the first ones, but barely noticed the last lot.

alohappychristmas · 30/12/2003 13:22

And be prepared - you might actually burst into tears if your baby does - I did!

dingo · 30/12/2003 13:41

I agree with the using of Calpol to head off any fever etc. I learnt my lesson with DD1.

Lisa78 · 30/12/2003 17:40

Oh God, oh God, oh God - that was HORRIBLE! DH can go next time! Poor baby, he sat on my knee in his vest, gurgling happily, followed by a puzzled look and then he let rip - feel like I have been to the Eva Braun school of parenting. He was so unhappy and after the second jab, they used the opportunity to get his polio drops in so he really screamed then. He's been cuddled by big brother at the moment, having had his 2.5ml of paracetamol suspension, but he's still wimpering, interspersed with full on screams.
But I didn't burst into tears in the doctors - got distinctly wobbly in the chemist tho, she was everso nice!

Lisa, sorry you found it so traumatic. Good idea about getting dh to go next time. I am a firm believer in getting someone else to take babies to these things if they give you the heeby jeebies

Lisa78 · 30/12/2003 22:31

I agree, but I will go with him anyway, I'd rather be there than worry at home! It was just horrid hurting him, poor lamb. He's had a terrible day crying if he wasn't held, though have managed to keep his temp down. Feel sad to see the little red bump where they stabbed him
Still better than catching polio et al

I'm as tough as old boots about these things...or so I thought till I watched a doctor get blood from my newborn baby's arm

Lisa78 · 30/12/2003 23:01

ouch! I watched a doctor get a pint of blood from DH's knee after he hurt it (DH that is, the doctor tried to fix it)
Doctor kept trying to get me to sit down so I wouldn't hurt myself if I fainted, huh, faint, it was DH, not DS!! Was really interesting though - esp as doctor ignored DH's whining about how much it hurt!!!!!!!!

suzywong · 31/12/2003 00:37

Don't BF for 20 mins after the polio dose in case they vom and vbring up the medicine, but the nurse should remind you of that.

Baby will not remember a thing and you've got to give him three lots of jabs anyway so just frit your teeth and roll up those all-in-one legs

Lisa78 · 31/12/2003 00:49

she bloody didn't - fortunately he wasn't sick but I think it was an hour or so after when I fed him
She didn't fill in the batch number either - should she have?

OP posts:
suzywong · 31/12/2003 00:52

Yes she should
Are you sure she wasn't an imposter?

Lisa78 · 31/12/2003 00:53

Oh Lord, don't you start! She's one of the health visitors, if she is an imposter, she has been coming to my house and drinking my coffee for the last 8 weeks too!!!!

OP posts:
suzywong · 31/12/2003 00:54

B**ch!
I'm sure it's nothing to worry about.

Lisa78 · 31/12/2003 01:02

I'm sure you are right, the ante and post natal care has been very good and they are very supportive (apart from one gp who is lovely but useless, thinks its 1950 I think!)
