Ok DS has had this vomiting thing that is going around. He was off school on Monday (vomited only once) seemed fine on Tuesday so back to school on Wed. Vomited once today and this is the strange part he started saying his leg hurts. It's his front thigh area that hurts (Quad area) and has now progressed so he can't walk on it.

I think it is probably a muscle strain brought on by usual antics but does anyone think it could be linked to the virus.

Thanks

When dd had this vomitty bug, her legs hurt and she couldn't put any weight them for a day or two. Part of the virus, I'd say.

drosophila · 23/03/2006 19:47

Did you go to Doc or give anything for pain. Thanks for info.

Didn't take her to the doctors, they were dropping like flies with it, so we knew what it was. We'd been giving her Calpol and ibuprofen to reduce her temperature, so just continued with that for the pain. I tried massaging her legs for her, which she said helped a little bit, and I just made sure she rested it as much as she could (not hard as she felt rough and didn't want to move around much).

The pain in her leg only lasted a couple of days, and wasn't as bad after the first day of pain. It seemed a bit like the aches and pains you get when you have flu.

Hope he feels better soon.

GDG · 23/03/2006 19:53

Funny you should say this. Ds1 was hospitalised for pneumonia at the end of FEb - he was in for 4 days. He was fine for a while after that but went back on antibiotics last week as he was coming down with lurgy again and GP didn't want to risk it. He finished his antibiotics the other day and tonight he is hot again and is saying that his legs hurt and he can't walk up the stairs Shock

I hope he's just knackered and not ill as it's birthday party on Saturday

Chapsmum · 23/03/2006 20:01

Poor wee soul, DRos. there are two things this could potentially be. One is a UTI the other is a viral hip infection. If he is still unable to weightbear despite calpol and brufen I would be taking him to the doc.

dinny · 23/03/2006 20:04

Drosophila, when ds had a UTI he was holding his legs up very strangely and reluctant to bear weight on them. Because he also had been diagnosed with a throat infection, I didn't really think of a UTI but he turned out to have one too. Maybe ask for a urine test, just to rule it out?

Has he got a temperature?

HappyMumof2 · 23/03/2006 20:08

can a UTI cause vomiting??? ds has had a urine infection and has just finished his antibiotics. He's actually had two courses back to back, as the first the GP prescribed for balanitis before she had the results back to confirm a UTI.
Today I had to collect him from school early as he'd vomited. This evening, he has a temperature and has been vomiting. He's been asleep since 6.15pm. He did say his wee was stinging this evening too although also saying he has a sore throat. Could the sickness be connected to the UTI or is it unrelated?? Tbh, I don't really want to take him to the GPs as they will just give him more antibiotics, but if he needs them...........

drosophila · 23/03/2006 20:10

There is no temperature and to be honest other than the vomiting this morning you would have thought there was nothing wrong untill the leg pain. He can be a drama queen so it's hard to gauge the severity of the pain and I am trying to observe him without him knowing. One minute he says there is no pain when lying still then he changes his mind later. He is six so not the easiest patient.

Happymum, any kind of infection can cause vomiting.

dinny · 23/03/2006 20:14

Hi, Happymumof2, poor ds, they are so poorly with UTIs, aren't they? My ds's UTI was preceded by balanitis. I now really think that the balanitis (caused by a course of antibiotics) then travelled up and caused a UTI. Anyway, irrelevant really. Just wanted to say that when dd had a UTI, she vomited. But also that I think UTI's often occur when there is lowered immunity in the body due to other bugs (such as sore throat etc).

If he's saying his wee is stinging it sounds like he still has a UTI... I'd go back, they'll prob try a different antibiotic.

HappyMumof2 · 23/03/2006 20:19

oh no, back again for us then tomorrow. I should have my own seat there, I'm there so much! Grin

the problem with ds is his foreskin is very tight, so this has caused the UTI apparently. He's been referred (for the second time) to paedatric surgery but his appointment isn't until May. I suppose if i take him tomorrow they may try and bring his appointment forward.

Part of me wishes I had him circumsised in the beginning when his problems started (at 3) as I think he's going to hate me forever if he has to have it done now! (he's nearly 7)

dinny · 23/03/2006 20:23

they may put him on an antibacterial till his paed app?

at least if he has the op at 7 he'll be able to understand what's going on/why he's having it etc.

do feel for you, it's so awful to be so worried about their crown jewels, isn't it?

HappyMumof2 · 23/03/2006 20:40

it's awful, isn't it?

I can't see any other solution apart from circumcision tbh. I suppose it will be better for him in the long run but just the thought of it......

How's your ds?

dinny · 23/03/2006 20:45

at least he'll be able to tell you if he's in pain, I suppose. poor thing. maybe it won't come to that

my ds OK atm, thanks.

Yafta · 23/03/2006 20:57

My ds had this for 9 days over Christmas & new year. He vomited every night without fail and complained of pain in this legs. I was about to take him to the doctors having decided that he was never going to stop, when it all finished. Oh, and he had no temperature either. Hope that helps to put your mind at rest.

kid · 23/03/2006 21:36

HMO2 - How is he now? I heard you didn't offer to clean up the sick! Grin
Hope he is feeling better soon.

drosophila · 24/03/2006 11:04

Well I spoke ot the out of hours doc last night and she suggested having him looked at by GP this morning. DS limps into my room this morning and says his leg still hurts. I bustle around for a while and get a Doc's apt and when I tell DS that we are going to DOc there is a miraculous recovery. I took him to GP who checked him over and with no limp in sight I felt a bit foolish I can tell you.

I am very cross and explained to him the risks he runs with this sort of embellishment. I think his leg did hurt but no where near as much as he made out. With a hypochondriac already in the family (my sister) I have a low tolerance for this sort of thing.

Piffle · 24/03/2006 11:15

dd could not put any weight on her leg last week, we thought shed broken it or soemthing but it is very common, to get a viral irritable hip/leg joint
It amazed us, shes is fine now 10 days later.

MummyPig · 24/03/2006 15:06

My ds1 did some impressive vomiting just as we picked him up from nursery one day, a few months ago. Just before it happened, he said "I think I'm going to be sick because my arm hurts". He may only be 4 but I think he knows the difference between his stomach and his arm. Found it quite intriguing. Hadn't heard of joints being affected by viruses, will look it up now.

HappyMumof2 · 24/03/2006 18:35

kid, I took ds to the GP this morning. He has a viral throat infection plus this sickness bug, that S had. Unfortuntely, now dd has been vomiting all afternoon. She can not keep anything down, even water Sad

kid · 24/03/2006 19:40

Hope its just a 24hr bug they have. R really must drink something though, even if she just manages ice lollies, she is smaller so I worry more about them at that age. Could she handle a couple of teaspoons of fluid at a time? That would be enough to prevent dehydration.

HappyMumof2 · 24/03/2006 20:47

she's had some rice milk mixed half with water and so far seems to have kept it down but I'll have to wait and see how she goes. Been asleep since 7pm and can just hear her waking up. It's going to be a long night Sad

Calista · 24/03/2006 20:59

There seems to be a nasty viral thing going round atm, ds1 had temp of 105 last Thurs and sore throat, doc put him on penicillin for 5 days and he was much better after about 48 hours although it's taken him till now to get fully back to normal.
Dh started with raging temp on Sat, aching all over and threw up a couple of times, plus sore throat. Men being as they are, it's taken him till today to go to Doc's, by which time his throat is so bad he can hardly eat or talk! Penicillin for him too, 10 day course as his throat is so bad.
Some colleagues have been off with v similar symptoms.

kid · 24/03/2006 21:13

There were 4 children in the class today complaining of feeling sick, its hard to tell if they really do feel sick but not worth taking any chances.
