Questions re rantitidine and domperidone

Just trying to figure out what is going on with dd who is now 4mnths. She seems to fuss all day (when not sleeping).

She had silent reflux and is currently take 1ml x 3 per day of rantitidine and has recently been prescribed domperidone (3.5ml x 3) which I haven't started her on yet because one of the possible side effects is tummy ache which she suffers from already. She still burps and spits up, up to 2hr after her feed not matter how big or small her feed is.

I have been told she is on the maximum dosages for her age and weight (7.5kg). Gaviscon isn't an option because she suffers from constipation. She is also milk protein intolerant and is on Neocate.

Any comments? Starting to lose my mind.

Hi CADS

My DS2 has reflux and at 4 months was similar to how your DD sounds now. I would start the dom peridone. All meds seem to list tummy ache as a possible side effect, but from my own experience dom peridone does work well - and DS2 has not had any adverse reaction to it. I give it 15 mins before meals and at bed time.

You may find that the medicines dont actually take away the reflux - but may make it easier for your DD to deal with and make her more comfortable with it (as much as she can be of course)

I do hope that is of some help. Do ask more questions etc if there is anything else you are unsure about etc.

Best wishes
NASWM

Thanks NASWM

Do you think it have some to do with the fact she is trying to sit and isn't happy leaning back even at the right angle? Would a cold make her spit up more? Also, how long do you think it will take for the domperidone to kick in?

She has been particularly difficult to feed to day only taking 2.5 - 3oz per feed where normally take 5-6.

Not sure about the trying to sit up thing - but if it IS reflux, she will be better in an upright position. try to hold her upright for as long as possible after a feed. The Dom peridone works straight away. Although it will prob take a day or so for you to notice any difference. Re the amount of feed - again, if it IS reflux, she will prefer lots of little feeds rather than a few big feeds. And yes, if she has a cold, the mucus will make her a bit more yucky.

Does any of that help?

Have you got a good HV? If not, try to see if you can see a HV with some experience of reflux. And ask your GP to refer you to a paediatrician, if you haven;t already. It will help, esp as you DD is milk protein intolerant.

Stay in touch

hi ya
matthew is 21 months and has reflux, he is also on domperidone and ranartidne, (2.6ml x 2 ranatdine and 6ml x 3 domeridone plus gavisocon)

matthew also suffers silent reflux

i would defo start it, if u go by all the side affects on any medication no one would take it, i remeber when matthew was put on a steroid inhaler it mentioned ulcers, growith resriction, they HAVE to mention all the known side affects, does not mean ur baby will get it,

if ur worried about this then maybe talk to the gp or paed and see what they say but im sure they wouldmt of gave it to u if they thought it would mke her feel worse

please try not to worry
love natalie

Thanks NASWM & nathollyandmatthew. I will give the domperidone I try. Maybe it is the cold or maybe the Neocate is a problem for her system.

NASWM - My HV and GPs are useless. Had the same thing with ds when he was a baby and HV and GPs kept saying it was colic even though I kept saying it seemed more like reflux than colic. He was only diagonise at 4mnths when he was admitted to hospital with blood in his stools. With dd I said the same thing and the only reason she was diagonised at 6 weeks is because she also did a stretch in hospital for broncilotis (spelling?). She is now unreview with a paed who said it sounded like she had milk intolerance as well as reflux.

Hope you had a nice mother's day.
