Hi

I have been deaf in my left ear for about 2 months now following a cold. I am assuming it is just a build up of wax. I have tried olive oil, am now on to Earex (which is basically the same, just different oil), but it actually seems to have made it worse. I was wondering if anyone has tried ear candles and do they work for this sort of thing.
I have to admit to sticking cotton buds down my ear which has prob made it worse, but I am desparate as it it getting me down now.
I have an appointment to see the doctor, but can't get in til next week.
HELP!

RTKangaMummy · 22/03/2006 11:45

GO to see a nurse top get them syringed IMHO

IIRC ear candles are for synusitus

mabel1973 · 22/03/2006 15:56

If ear candles are not really suitable - does anyone have any other advice?
Or maybe I just need to sit it out til I see the doctor next week?

otex .. you can get it over the counter

Radley · 22/03/2006 16:12

Hopi ear candling can indeed help with ear problems, but only if there are no contra-indications, ie, you have not had an ear infection within the past 3 months, you have an ear-drum, you haven't had a perforated ear drum etc. There are more and your therapist should you try this should go through them with you.

You should also be aware that hopi ear candling does not always completely cure, or in some case affect any condition whatsover. Some people swear by it, other people have had full recommended courses and noticed no difference.

It is a very relaxing procedure and you feel no discomfort at all, its aim is do draw out impurities from your ear and whilst doing this the drawing effect gently massages the ear drum, so this COULD help your hearing.

Hope this helps, if you have any more questions, please ask, I am training to be a therapist In hopi at the minute.

Radley · 22/03/2006 16:13

RTK, yes hopi ear candling may help synusitus, but it can also help, vertigo, tinnitus, migraine and hayfever.

pindy · 22/03/2006 16:14

I am a thermal auricular therapist (ear candles) and my clients find that they work wonders for all sorts of things. Cold, sinuses, tinnitus, menieres, great when about to fly, stress relief. Find a local person and don't pay over the odds, £25 top, you may need 2-3 treatments if that is the case get them to give you a discount. Where abouts in the country are you?

Good luck. If you want any more advice just ask.

Twiglett · 22/03/2006 16:14

was a firm believer in hopi candles until someone on here linked to an experiment .. and it seems they're total bunkum Shock

Radley · 22/03/2006 16:16

No, they are not total bunkum, ime, they started with the hopi indians years ago and has been used for centuries. it all depends on your expectations, if you go in expecting a miracle then you may well be dissappointed, but if you go in with an open mind you may be pleasantly surprised.

I would keep on using drops and see the doctor who can refer you to the nurse for syringing. My ears got worse when I started using drops. I think it's because the wax swells and moves around before it starts to drain out.

pindy · 22/03/2006 18:09

Ear syringing is much worse for your ears. Once you have it done you have to keep having it done. Ear candles are much better for you and the whole experience is much more relaxing.

Kathy1972 · 22/03/2006 18:17

No you don't need to keep having it done - I had my ears syringed in 1994 and have not needed to have it done since.

Kathy1972 · 22/03/2006 18:27

A quote from \link{http://www.nowtoronto.com/issues/2005-01-13/goods_health.php\here}

"A call to the Hopi Tribal Council in Kykotsmovi, Arizona, reveals the following: coning "is not and has never been a practice conducted by the Hopi tribe or the Hopi people," according to public relations officer Vanessa Charles. End of story."

I know nothing whatsoever about Hopi ear candling myself, just thought I'd throw that into the mix and run away Grin

Blandmum · 22/03/2006 18:30

OMG Kathy the last paragraph from your link!!! Shock

' "I've done one repair surgery for somebody who had ear candling. The wax had burnt right through his eardrum and he was in excruciating pain. I have also seen at least two people who had the molten wax stuck in their ear. Luckily, I managed to dig it out without long-term problems. As far as the claims about it curing wax and tinnitus and sinuses, it's all nonsense. There is nothing that setting your ear on fire is going to cure. The warmth may indeed feel better, but it's not going to change your immune system."

I love having my ears syringed

It is deffo brill SmileSmileSmile

MrsBadger · 22/03/2006 18:52

I rubbished this on here a few months ago - it was me Twiglett was referring to.

They are all rubbish. Sorry, but they are.

Kathy1972 · 22/03/2006 18:54

Looks fun though doesn't it?
Go on mabel, you know you want to - it probably won't go horribly wrong Grin

fatbetty · 22/03/2006 19:15

Hi mabel, go and see your doc ASAP. I lost my hearing in my right ear in November - just woke up one morning and it was gone. I was really dizzy for about 10 days and then was fine except still deaf in my ear. I went to see my GP on day 1 and he said it would clear. Went to see another GP at my surgery and he mentioned the same thing. In the end I asked to see a specialist and had a hearing test done and basically has said that my hearing is gone. Had an MRI done and have seen two other ENT specialist in the States and in London and they pretty much say the same thing.

I don't mean this has happen to you but DO NOT let you GP fob you off saying that it's because of your cold. The early you see a specialist the more they can do to save your hearing!!!

I haven't had the candle treatment done. I've always wondered if it would help. I think I read on here too that they are rubbish.

Blu · 22/03/2006 19:20

ROFL at 'There is nothing that setting your ear on fire is going to cure. '

I would have thought that the v gentle effect of the draft or vacuum set up by the candle might have some effect for some things - but there was a debunking of the stuff that comes out, wasn't there? it is just stuff from the candle, and you get the same residue whether it has been burning in an ear or a clean empty jam jar.

donnie · 22/03/2006 19:21

my dad has been using hopi candles for several years and swears by them.

I am not sure about the candle thing at all now! Maybe I'll wait and see the doctor 1st........!

Aah Kathy's reassuring presence on this thread...
I was about to post that they're not worth the money (£25 ffs - come off it) IME but seems a lot of you have beat me to it.
Sorry but this sort of stuff gives alternative therapies a bad name.
