2 year old DS has HUGE tonsils and sleep apnia - anyone have any experience or advice?

We have been refered to a ENT specialist, but I am very scared because the tonsils are so large they restrict his breathing (he wakes up about 15 times a night because he can't breath, and then goes straight back to sleep).

Can someone tell me not to worry about this?

Would you move him into your room for sleeping until we can see the specialist?

My mum's bestfriend's son had his tonsils out when he was two and tragically died on the operating table. Hence, VERY nervous about this whole thing.

TIA

I'm having my tonsils out soon, partly due to sleep apnoea. Can you ring the hospital and find out how long you will have to wait for an appointment?
I presume it is a few years since the little boy died.... there are risks with every surgery but I would think that in your Ds's case the prospect of sleep apnoea outweighs risks of surgery.

appointment is in 9 days time yorkie girl

and yes, we are talking about 35 years ago since the little boy died

re the sleep apnia - will he always wake up, or should i buy some time of alarm which wakes him up if he stops breathing?

friends' little girl had this at about the same age, her tonsils were taken out

Koalabear, my boy had the same problem at the same age, and we worried about the same things. We were told that he would automatically wake up if he stopped breathing- to change position and take a breath- we watched him for hours and this proved to be true. He had his tonsils out at 4, all went well, except for one thing- the pre-op assessment was a week before the op so that by the time he went in for the op he had a new infection so it couldn't be done. You might need to create a stink so he can have the assessment the day before the op- we did and were lucky 3rd time round. The op itself was fine- the 10 days of recovery hell! Good luck.

my dd had grommits in tonsils and adenoids out all at the same time, she had sleep apneia. she is a ifferent little girl, she had op when nearly 4 she was eating the next day, her voice went a little squeky and shrill at first.

she is back to normal now and she has put on weight (she was very little before op) she just suddenly went from toddler to child.

everything will be ok if he needs ads out the specialist will tell you, but push for it if he is suffering at night

thank you all - it is good to know that others have successfully treated the same thing

a friend of mine had her ds's tonsils and adenoids removed at the same time at the age of 3.5. again, a different child. his speech improved dramatically, his eating improved hugely and so he put on weight and height (his tonsils were impeding the amount he could swallow) and he finally started sleeping through the night. he was a little sore for a day or two but then absolutely fine - but better!

koalabear · 21/03/2006 20:14

wow - so this revelation would explain his eating habits too ! that's good to know as i thought he was just being fussy

Its amazing Koala their tonsil/adenoids are connected to so many different factors. Bless i used to really feel for my baby when she was up gasping for breath on a night.

7up · 21/03/2006 20:31

my ds now 11years had his tonsils/adenoids removed at 2.9 years, the premed was awful, made him freak right out. they made him eat toast before we leftShockhe ate it and came home same day and recovered very quickly.

i think id struggle not to sit up all night watching his breathing if i was youSadpraps you could get the apt rushed forward and have them removed quicker if you nag them, good luck

thanks - and i think i only half sleep, listening to him also Sad but it will be wonderful when he is all fixed up and happy
