Might sound a bit bonkers, but any reasons for the persistant 'minty' taste in my mouth?

It feels like I have a minty, almost tingly taste in my mouth all the time (for about a week now)

Can feel it on my lips sometimes as well

I am at a loss, and Google no help... can't come up with anything!

(NOT pg, btw)

TIA!

Hope some one more helpful comes along soon!

I know exactly what you are talking about. I have the following symptoms:

  1. burning mouth (it is as if you have just brushed your teeth with really minty toothpaste that burns.) all the time. It is like I've scalded my mouth on a hot drink.
  2. the inside of my lips burn too, and feels really strong when I am tired.
  3. I can barely taste anything anymore.
  4. Water cools it, but only for the time it is in my mouth.

I went to the doctor yesterday about it as it has been going on for 6+ weeks, I thought at first it was because I started using a different toothpaste, but when I stopped that toothpaste it persisted.

My doctor is now sending me for blood tests.

Let me know if the dentist can come up with anything. I have tried to make an appointment with mine, but seems to be constantly engaged.

Just google "constant minty taste in mouth". There's a whole world of stuff out there.

notnowbernard · 27/09/2012 13:46

echt - believe me, I am GoogleQueen when it comes to this lark and I have come up with nada: either pregnancy (def not) or GORD (refux type stuff - am convinced it's not this)

mumof4sons - weird, isn't it?! Went to the dentist, he x-rayed my back teeth (all fine), nothing wrong with either of my fillings, said it might be gum-related and to see the hygieneist but could see no problems

Interestingly, the taste has gone today. I do have a cold just come out, I wonder if it was a sinus thing?

Hello! Just wondering if you ever figured out the cause of the minty taste in your mouth. I have had the same thing for a couple of months no and it is making me crazy. I constantly feel like I just brushed my teeth with super strong toothpaste and nothing makes it go away. Doctor didn't have a clue; I see a dentist next week, but I'm not hopeful I will get answers. Thanks!

Google burning mouth syndrome. Both my mum and I have had it. Can be hormone related. Think mine was around when I hit 60 eventually went.

ThesecondLEM · 28/09/2021 04:24

Covid?

LucyBlackshaw20 · 19/10/2021 17:39

@MommySapp have you had covid at any point? I’m currently experiencing the same thing, had it for a few weeks now and it’s really frustrating. The only thing I’m thinking it could be is something related to covid which I had around 10 weeks ago.

Eve400 · 22/09/2022 15:08

Hi, I might be wrong, but I think I have figured out the cause.

I started experiencing a minty taste about 2 months after moving into my new flat. Along with a minty mouth, I also notice it when I drink water as if I have just brushed my teeth and if I breath in sharply, it's very noticeable. Worse still though, it gives me a bit of stomach cramps and I also sometimes feeling it tingling in my eyes. Some days it isn't too bad, but I usually always have it to some degree for about 3 months now.

After much trial and error, I have come to the conclusion that it is second hand vaping. I know that at east one of my neighbours (in the flat below), vapes and I think it comes through the vents and other small gaps. Many of the vape flavours contain mins or what they call "ice" and I think this contains a menthol chemical that causes this mintyness in the air. I'm am so at the end of my tether with it. The reason why I made the connection is because my partner also vapes, and I noticed when I was in his house the same kind of problem happened around his vaping paraphernalia. (He doesn't vape in the house though).

I actually hope I am wrong though, as this might be a difficult thing to avoid. I heard somewhere else that it can be caused by stomach issues (GERD IBS, heartburn etc), which actually I do have, but it is under control most of the time for many years, so I doubt that is the cause if this one.

Eve400 · 22/09/2022 16:59

Also, just want to add that the mint feeling also makes me feel cold, as if the temperature is lower than it actually is and reduces my appetite, like it does when you brush your teeth.

Amarette · 22/09/2022 22:00

Another vote for burning mouth syndrome. My DM has it and was prescribed nerve pain medication.

Eve400 · 25/09/2022 14:33

**Update

After doing some more research on the mint "thing", I have found another possible cause.

I think it could be down to developing a salicylate allergy or sensitivity. I also have allergies/asthma/eczema etc and all the salicylate sensitivity symptoms check out with me too. I have noticed that my allergies have become a bit worse over the last few years, so that also makes sense.

If not that then maybe just developing a sensitivity to mint/mentol or whatever the main component of that is.

Does that ring true with anyone else? Did anyone else find a cause?

That's the best I can come up with so far. If I find anything else, I'll post.

Would be great to hear if anyone could corroborate that or identify in some way, so we can find a conclusion. My stomach pains are becoming more frequent and seriously getting me down, so I am fairly motivated to find an answer asap.

Eve400 · 25/09/2022 14:34

P.S I didn't get covid (to my knowledge) and had both vaccinations.

Starrr123 · 23/05/2023 09:16

@Amarette did the medication help your mum?

Starrr123 · 23/05/2023 09:17

@notnowbernard how are you now? X

Starrr123 · 23/05/2023 09:17

@Eve400 did it go ? X

Eve400 · 23/05/2023 12:50

Hi,

I was waiting to update to find the actual solution, but I rarely get the minty thing anymore. My 3 suspisions were vape steam (second hand or first if you vape), allergy to the chemicals that make up the minty/menthol product and a new theory, a fungal infection. I'm now thinking it was a fungal infection that makes the body more sensitive to minty/menthol and other aerosol particles. I moved to a new house and Im sure the water from the bathroom tap (for brushing teeth) is questionable as I was also getting stomach upsets. I no longer use that water and lo and behold all the symptoms have pretty much gone. However, I can;t confrm that that is the cause but it could be. So if you have problems with mould, mildew, dodgy water etc you may have a fungal infection and this causes the sensitivity.

Hope that helps!

Starrr123 · 23/05/2023 14:46

@Eve400 thankyou for ur reply :)
did u get treatment for a fungal infection? My tap water in my bathroom aometimes is browny colour! Intresting its sooo annoying xxx

Eve400 · 24/05/2023 12:17

Hi,

I didn't get any treatment for the fungal infection (if it is was indeed that).

Once I stopped using the water for brushing teeth, my cold/mint etc symptoms just seems to subside slowly, but at first I didn;t make the connection. It was only when I saw on another thread somewhere that someone else had made a link to a fungal infection, where once cleared, the strange symptoms also cleared. I do still get the symptoms it a tiny little bit from time to time but its very bearable now, and I'm thinking could be residual fungal infection which hasn't fully cleared. But I think if you remove the fungal cause, your body can do the rest, so perhaps no need for medication. That is weird that your tap water is off too, maybe you can try stop using it for a while and see how you go? I hope it helps!

Of course this is just my theory but it does seem to check out and rather than blame individual causes such as exposure to chemicals etc, I think it is more of a case of immune system is low due to fungal infection and therefore manifests all of the minty type symptoms.

It really is a strange thing and not helpful that is isn't an established medical issue but I suppose we can only go on our own eexperiences and try to correlate it with other problems etc. Some people reckon it's a teeth problem, or back/nerve problem related but I'm not so sure about that.

Jenbythebeach001 · 27/07/2023 15:07

To the person that thinks your Bonkers,, your not. I took wake up with a minty taste and during the day I taste it. It is strange ! But. If I find out anything new I'll post it.

fishdontswim · 29/08/2023 00:04

New menthol mouth symptom haver here. I don't think it aligns with Burning Mouth Syndrome, as there isn't any pain. I'm an ex smoker of 8 years, but it feels exactly like it used to if I had a menthol cigarette, and I never smoked menthol regularly, since I never liked this particular sensation. I use THC vapes and I'm wondering if the new one I've had for about a week or so now is causing this sensation. It's not marked that it's menthol at all, but I'll stop using it for a while and see what happens.

Eve400 · 29/08/2023 08:57

fishdontswim that's interesting that you would suspect the vape as that was my original thought. I went on to think it was a fungal infection and my symotoms seem to get milder for a while but I think that could have been a pacebo effect thinking I had worked it out urgh. The symptoms returned the same as ever.

I've been keeping a diary and it seems that every time I get the minty sensation/stomachache is also when I am exposed to vaping so I am back to being almost certain it is the cause for me. I think it is possible that certain substances bring on the mint symptom in people who are prone to it and vape steam (first or second hand) is one of them. Do you have any stomach issues and/or allergies?

I have GERD and other stomach issues and also have severe allergies and mild asthma.

I hope this helps get closer to solving the mystery. I have had it now for well over a year and its seriously getting me down.

Momofgranddaughter · 20/10/2023 23:04

I have started having the Menthol taste and tingling on my tongue. I have researched also and I'm thinking it may be caused by GERD. When it started it would come and go and now it's just there all the time! It's terrible.
