Thyroid nodules anyone ? I am terrified

I had a scan after I noticed some slight swelling on one side of my neck.

Scan has picked up thyroid nodules and the dr doing scan said I would probably be referred back foe needle biopsy.

I am terrified and trying not to google

Ah, I googled the same thing only yesterday as I feel my thyroid's a bit swollen. Apparently 90% of nodules are benign, and then out of a few cancers that you can get, only one is really, really nasty (and usually affects people over 60 and is less than 1% of thyroid cancers).

My best friend had biopsy few months ago, hers were benign. HTH

I had this two years ago.

I was diagnosed as having a multinodular goitre.

The needle test is a little bit grim, but over very quickly.

Most likely it will be clear and if it is a mng then my understanding is that they subside.

In my case there were cells in my needle test that were... not undefined, but the medical equivalent.

So my needle test wasn't clear and there was the possibility it was a cancerous tumour.

I was offered further needle tests to see if they were clear (as it wasn't certain that there was anything to worry about) or surgery to have half of my thyroid gland removed. This was the only way to know for sure whether it was cancerous once the needle test was inconclusive.

I opted for surgery and it turned out I had a follicular adenoma, which is a benign tumour.

I was very scared and worried, but a friend who had thyroid cancer told me that the very worst outcome was very treatable.

Have my first ever (hug), it's frightening, but the chances are good that your needle test will be clear and you won't have to think about it any more.

Than you. I am worried about the needle test too. Scan was Friday so not had chance to go back to GP for full scan report or action plan.
Will I need bloods done too do you know ?

And do you need any ongoing meds after your op or follow up at all ?

I have had a fine needle aspiration thingy on a thyroid nodule and it was totally fine. So much so that I don't actually remember it hurting at all. Went straight back to work, nary a plaster over the site where the needle went in. Mine was benign.

I'm on 75mcg levothyroxine now.

I had to fight pretty hard for that. I was hypothyroid but my nubers were within the normal range.

Have you had TFTs done? If not, I would recommend it so you have some kind of baseline for your "normal".

Do you have any symptoms of thyroid disease?

Don't be scared.

I had a really big one that proved to benign & was left alone as it wasn't bothering me at all. I had it for 3 years, then woke up one day and found it had gone.

I very, very much doubt yours is anything other than benign. BUT, if the worst comes to the worst, thyroid cancer is about the most treatable there is. Seriously.

Well I feel a bit better today. My GP rang this morning and said e scan report said they looked like colloidal nodules and I have them on both sides. Blood test being done and referral to the thyroid doc.
