YES! It is by far THE most stressful, difficult, impossible, heartbreaking, stressful, stressful, stressful experience that i have ever encounted as a new mum!

I ABSOLUTELY feel for you!
Ok, so i used infacol, give it about 20mins pre milk feed, try different bottles. Someone on here will come up with the name of them, im not sure but you can buy them on line and they will come quickly.

Try massage of the tummy, round and round motions.
There are all different preperations out there at the pharmacy for this.
Please be reassured that it should end within the next few weeks.....i know iknow you are finding it hard to get through minuits at the mo never mind weeks, but it does get better hun.
Its not that you are not coping it is that it is very very very hard to deal with.

My heart goes out to you - it really does. My DD had colic (or so I thought) from four weeks to 15 weeks - she cried for approx 20 hours a day - my husband worked nights - so I was on my own day and night - I was so tired and distraught and upset and just wanted to run away. I hated it and it ruined my first 4 months with her - I felt it affected our bond. It came round to Christmas and DH had two weeks hol and he finally saw what it was like - we went to see the HV together, I had been going every week on my own, and the HV said try this try that try the other - none of it made any difference. When I went with DH she said I have nothing left to suggest except go and see the doctor. We got an appointment that day and the Doctor checked DD out - said nothing physically wrong with her - and that at 15 weeks she should have grown out of colic. I was breastfeeding still and she said the only thng left to try was formula. So we went out and bought formula one that aided digestion. Gave her a bottle when we got home - she slept for four hours, gave her another bottle - she slept another four hours - and there the story ends. It transfomred her overnight. It turned out unwittingly - that the formuale we bought was lactose free - we think DD had developed a lactose intolerance. I took her back to the doctors a week later and she said it was possible, but she would not send her for tests as she had settled nicely now. Doctor said if you keep her on the same formula and give her gut a chance to rest the intolerance may well go away. Well I am happy to say it did. I am not saying this will be your solution - I do not know if you are Breast feeding or formulae, but am surprised that colic should start at 12 weeks - it usually settles down then. If you are breastfeeding - just try one bottle and see what happens - our result was instant - so you will know. If you are already using formuale - try changing it to another one. Good luck Honey - I feel so much for you - it can be hell, but you have to keep going and I wish you the very best.

Dr Browns bottles/B Free bottles(the same thing just some sites call it different names) These bottles are amazing! I tried infacol, colief and dentinox and found none of these made any difference to DD who screamed all day and all night! Also, changed the formula too, not sure if that hepled

Coolmama · 21/03/2006 09:13

I can definitely add my vote for the Dr Browns bottles - am a huge fan - DS only had two nights of a little bit of colic and crying for about 45 mins and that was all. As I was mix feeding, I also switched to Cow and Gate omneo comfort formula which may have helped too.

DS 1 & 2 had colic but at an earlier age. I think they become so overtired that it becomes almost impossible to settle them. I would try swaddling DS (but leave his arms out as he is older), put him up to your shoulder and gently pat his back. Don't shoogle him up and down as this apparently over stimulates them and keeps them awake. Also try feeding him more upright, this always helped my two. HTH.

also used infacol and other mums recommend infant gaviscon but i found the best bottles were playtex ones which you can get here \link{http://www.infantcaredirect.co.uk/acatalog/Disposable_Nursers_&_Starter_Sets.html\this}
the teats are really soft too and no air can get into the teat so no air to the baby which helps is they are a real guzzler.

Also found there is no such thing as 12 week colic (which my HV assured me it was!) my DS had it for 4 months until we found a solution sorry to bring bad news but you will just have to perservere to getting it sorted

Marie12 · 21/03/2006 16:13

i found colief worked - £10 in boots or some doctors prescribe it. also try pumping the legs up to the chest in a bicycle motion to try and bring the wind up that way

williamboon · 22/03/2006 12:17

Thank you all very much - it seems to have sorted itself out now - shouldn't have complained really as i've had 11 weeks with nothing so 2 days of no sleep is not bad going - all is well now.

I'd tried all the things you said but i found the best thing was the Miracle Blanket from Mothercare it swaddles them and this seemed to calm him right down so if anyone ever has problems use this as the drugs only worked for a few moments.
