Since last week I have had horrendous stomach pains on waking, I have rushed to the toilet to have both constipation and diahorrea at the same time. Yes I know that sounds weird but, to start I deposit mucus, liquid types stuff, but then need to go more and just can't. This stuff is more of a solid nature and doesn't shift easily but is definately there. It tapesr off during the morning and then starts again the following day, anyone had something similar, is it a bug type thing or indicative of something else?

It sounds very much like the same thing my dad has. He has had various tests and the doctors haven't found out what it is or wehats causing it.

He does take medication to control it though.

The only difference is that my dads sometimes does happen during the day too although it is more common in the morning.

Can't help but would say, why wait any longer, go to your doctor now. Please.

mykidsmum · 20/03/2006 10:41

Thanks nutty, I haven't had day experience, just 1/2 an hour in the morning, it is just so horrendous, agony. Does his medication make it easier for him to go, was thinking of purchasing some laxatives but not sure if this will make it worse.

I think if it continues Rey I will have to go to the gp, problem is I was there last week with something else, feeling drained etc, worry he may think I'm a hypochondriac

I wouldn't go with laxatives, tbh. You need to see a doctor asap, DON't start self-prescribing.

MoonLady · 20/03/2006 10:46

mykidsmum SadPoor you, sounds like irritable bowel to me. Go to the doctor's to check of course but you can also keep a food diary to discover what is triggering those symptoms.

In my case it is cheese and dairy to excess, wheat, and salad leaves of any sort. If you ask at a health food shop the assistant will be able to advise you re aloe vera etc

However my major trigger is stress, not always as easy to deal with. If i start with a flare up I know I need to rest, relax, to have 'me time' and to address what's bothering me. I recommend Pilates, either on DVD at home or a class if you can.
Searching net is helpful, try:-

Good luck

From what he has said his medication sets his bowels pretty much back to normal. Only thing is the tablets do seem to make him quite tired and lethargic.

I think they begin with L, will try and remember.

mykidsmum · 20/03/2006 10:49

Thanks NDP and Moonlady, you're right self prescribing not the best route, am terrible like that, always feel like I'm bothering the doctors.I have been stressed recently and feeling generally run down so could be IBS, no dietary change as such but keep a food diary anyway so will have a look. Its more of an inconvenience than anything, with four kids to get out the door in the morning the last thing I need is to be stuck on the loo Sad

I get this quite often & I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I flucuate between the two as you described and rarely feel "empty" for want of a better word.

mykidsmum · 20/03/2006 10:52

I will check out website, ta. Thanks Nutty if you can remember it would be great can look in my bnf then and see what they treat.

not weird to have constipation and diahorrea at the same time

if there is a blockage (constipation) the other stuff backs up behind then runs out (usually very mucoid)

melissasmummy · 20/03/2006 10:53

Should have added, the pain I get is the intestines going into spasm. I take Cofolac (prescibed) when I feel I need it.

mykidsmum · 20/03/2006 10:54

Sorry you have problems Melissasmummy, can definately identify with the 'empty' thing.

I have learned to live with it. As a consequence tho, when I need to go, I need to go. Otherwise I can be in agony for days!

I hope you get sorted soon. There are many good products on the market, including the Aloe vera, somebody else mentioned. I used this as a detox method. It worked, but tastes bad!

mykidsmum · 20/03/2006 11:02

Ta Enid, think instead of going to the chemist I will go and get some pineapple, to see if there is a blockage to shift Grin If not then i guess i will have to go to drs.
I can handle disgusting tastes much better than tummy ache MM Grin, I am a right wuss when it comes to pain and all things poo!

This sounds familiar, although I also get crampy "period" type pains too, but very low down, mostly towards the left hand side..

Mfer · 21/03/2006 13:34

This sounds excatly what I have had for years and in fact I was recently diagnosed with IBS following a colonoscopy to eradicated any nasties!!!. What happens is the bowel isn't empyting properly or regularly enough and the mucos and unusal stools is generally caused by a lack of natural fibre in the diet - I saw a wonderful consultant in cambridge who specialises in this - I take Normacol daily (a natural fibre) and once a week Movicol (which keeps the bowel moving) after my initial treatment things were great but I went away for 5 days and forgot my medication - symptons came back - so you need to keep on top of it - definitely see your gp and if your can get referred - do not get fobbed off with Fybogel etc as this won't help unless your bowel is completely cleared. If they know what they are talking about they will give you a strong laxative to clear the bowel and then daily fibre to keep things moving - the mucous s& diarreohea should clear up really quickly.
