Sprained ankle - strange sensation today

I managed to fall down the last couple of stairs yesterday, with my ankle going right over and me falling on top of it. The initial pain was horrific - enough to have me heaving into the kids' sick bowl!

It immediately swelled up to the size of a golf ball, and I couldn't bear any weight so DH took me to A&E. They did two x-rays, and said nothing broken just a nasty sprain.

My foot feels really odd today, almost like a 'dead leg' - you know it's there but can't feel it properly. If I elevate that foot, I get a cold sensation running up my shin towards my knee, which stops if I put the foot down again.

Am I being a wuss or should I speak to someone (GP, A&E)? DH thinks wuss Blush

Is it banadaged/strapped too tightly???

ChickenLidl · 20/09/2012 13:00

No bandage at all - A&E doctor said they don't recommend this anymore because people do them up too tight!

How much pain are you in on it ?

Can you bear any weight on it?

is your foot blue or pale in relation to the other foot

is any part completely numb or very very cold

if you press is a numb area does it go white then colour comes back in

(Disclaimer!: I sound like a DR I think but i'm not just years of crap ankles and some really similar injuries to yours)

Pain isn't too bad if it's kept still, but any movement is agony.

Strangely, if I'm very careful and keep it flat, I can bear weight on it. I can't walk/hobble on it though - because that involves moving it. Can't bear weight on ball of foot though - that's where the main dead feeling is Confused

Both feet look the same - but I do have a very fluffy slipper on my right foot because it feels so cold. My left foot had to come out of its slipper because it got too hot!

If I prod with my fingers I can feel that - but sat here now my foot just feels strange. Like it's not quite there?!

Takes ages for colour to come back, but the other foot is quite slow as well.

Basically, you're going to say wuss as well aren't you?! Grin

sorry only just got back to this - no don't think wuss at all i have been there and done exactly the same thing. Done the vomiting with the pain of it was jogging down stairs and 'jogged' right over on to it thought i was going to pass out...needed crutches...

If you have not broken it then if you did go right over you have most likely torn the ligaments which most professionals will concur is actually worse to treat and recover from than a straight forward fracture.

I would go back to your GP and try to get some physio booked in - it would be good to get Ultra sound therapy on it. If you have got any sort of private healthcare get on to them now....

Seriously it took me 3 + months to be able to wear heels again and then the day I did, in a ridiculous freak accident at work (the day I wore my Luuuuuuurverly kitten heeled suede boots), involving a mouse...I jumped in shock and went over on it again - not quite so much but was then in flats again and more physio for another few weeks.

Hot and cold therapy very good - alternate between hot compress and frozen peas and keep foot elevated. Also take plenty of ibuprofen to manage the inflammation - but DEF go back to GP or walk in centre to get a physic referral

Sprains can be worse than fractures apparently.

actually I would probably go back to a+e and tell them you don't have feeling in it and it feels numb they should then check the nerves etc ...
