Gallbladder?

I have been experiencing lots of pain albeit mostly only at night in my ribs mostly right side. Doc thinks could b gallstones. An X-ray has shown nothing now waiting for ultrasound.
Have any of you ladies experienced this and if you had gallstones did it only show on ultra sound? Also is surgery usually the only way?

I was in and out of hospital A&E for months with pain (mine was under my ribs, right hand side too). The pain was unbearable. It started with a dull ache, then it was almost feel like a contraction, the pain would build and then decrease, eventually it would be constant strong pain. I would begin to feel sick, then water (saliva) was pour out of my mouth (sorry TMI), then it would stop. I was left feeling shattered.

It took 4 trips to A&E, morphine etc before someone suggested it could be gallstones. I have private health so immediately went for an ultrasound (I don't think you can see them on x-rays) and it was confirmed. My Gallbladder was nearly full of tiny gallstones. They told me that surgery was my only option and I had the op a week later. That was 10 years ago.

The ultrasound will show if you have gallstones.

Is this any help? I hope you get your ultrasound soon.

Just out of interest have you lost a lot of weight recently? I'd lost 5 stone when I developed them and it seems to be common.

The prime candidates for gallstones are "fat, female and forty" according to my GP mate.

My sister just had the op, and her symptoms sound very similar (although I don't know how exactly they picked up the problem).

She now has a little pot of gallstones in her handbag which she shows people. They are very pretty - I have suggested she makes jewellery out of them Grin

dh had gallstones. yes, they showed up on the ultrasound, and yes, surgery is probably the best option, they tend to whip out the whole gallbladder. dh had it done at christmas, did take about 5 weeks in total for him to fully recover, but he set himself back by not taking it easy enough early on and strained everything. but now, he's fine, no pains at all after years of agony.

Mine too showed up on an ultrasound. luckily i have a healthcare plan, so went in and had keyhole surgery..there was a long nhs list. I was fine and dandy within about 3 weeks. The pain before hand was absolute agony. At times i was rolling around the floor it was so bad....easily as bad as childbirth. One of my stones was golfball sized ---i was very proud of that!! Sadly i lost it when i moved house - wonder if anyone found it!

I've got mine in a little tube too! I find it a good way to empty a room in a hurry!!
Anyway OP - I can only recommend you get it whipped out and the sooner the better. I'm coming up for 6 weeks post op and almost feel human again after what I now realise was at least a year of gallbladder related misery. Good luck to you and hope its all sorted soon

Thank you all got your replies..I'm still waiting for an appointment for my ultrasound. Think I will chase it up. Yes as you've all said X-ray was clear. Strange how pain is only really at night is this what you have found too? Ian about the same weight as I've been for the last few years about ten stone and 5'6". Iam heading to forty though seems this is the most at risk group. I just hope it is my gallbladder now otherwise all this pain but I won't be any nearer resolving it!
