Vertigo?

Today I liked kids up from school bus, got home in kitchen talking to ds1 and everything just started to tilt slide and go dark. I grabbed the kitchen bench and it literally passed in 3 seconds. Was fine. It happened about a month ago as well but I was in bed reading and the same thing. Thinking the worst of course. Would you go check it out at docs ?

Well, first Notice if everything Around you seems to be spinning,or if YOU seem
To be in Motion.Write it down, And the episodes and Times of day. Now, it's
Straightaway to the Doctors...For an "Ear Checkup".Little bones in the ears
and All Kinds of things can go Wrong with the ears that cause these "Dizzy
Spells".Also, must bring any Meds you are currently Taking. Jill.

With vertigo you feel as though you are spinning and falling, and clutch at things even if you are sitting still. The thing that worries me more is the "everything started to go dark" as that sounds more like a faint than vertigo. You do need to get it checked to establish what is happening.

mum4041 · 19/09/2012 13:55

I would just to rule out anything else.

I had it just a couple of times - really strange feeling. Like the room was spinning. The GP gave me some exercises to do - Cawthorne-Cooksey if you want to find them on the internet.

But I think it is worth getting checked over. The 2nd time I went, the GP said if it comes back again she'll refer me for tests. But so far it hasn't.

Def get it checked for peace of mind but I have had something called BPPV since May, which sounds similar. It especially happens when I tilt my head back or lie down. Might be that?

itshotintexas · 19/09/2012 19:25

Thanks everyone
I am now thinking it went dark (don't laugh!) because I kind of closed my eyes with the way everything tilted ans slid. I grabbed the bench because I thought I was going to fall over. Def think its vertigo not dizziness but really sudden and short lasting. Am hypothyroid but well controlled on meds. Will go to doc and ask, I think.

Might be Menieres. Usually causes buzzing in ears but symptoms vary. Worth a look in Google. Seem to remember reading there can be thyroid involvement, but may be wrong.

This sort of thing happens to me episodically - can go months without trouble and then exactly what you have described happens, but just for seconds but it is very disorientating.

I have also had a few attacks of vertigo which as others have said is a feeling of yourself spinning or the room swimming about. It's really quite scarey. I went to GP and I think he gave me something called "Stemetel" (not right spelling) which is used for travel sickness I think.

I have had extreme dizziness when I wake sometimes, especially if I turn my head to one side. It doesn't last long, but went to the GP and she said it was probably begnine positional vertig. She said it occurs as you get older (I am in my late 60's) and is something to do with minute hairs attached to the inner ear dropping off(!) or something, but it went away.

thanks greatresult and nananina. I made an appointment with the doc for tomorrow. A friend has had a brain tumour and aneurysm this year - she is only 42 so I am paranoid. I am 41 - think it might be bppv - like nananina and beattheclock say. Also have history of migraines and shooting pain up one side of head - nerve pain maybe. But hopefully that is unrelated. Will post tomorrow with what doc says - am in US so will be afternoon UK time.
Thanks again everyone.

Been to docs - booked in for MRI of head and neck with contrast for next Thursday. Am hoping all is ok. Not keen on the claustrophobic side of MRI so have script for Valium - going to take 15mg. Hopefully that will keep me blissfully unaware. Thanks for the all the help. Hope they don't find anything bad.

Please don't panic about being sent for an MRI. It is standard practice. Chances of it being anything sinister are slim. Good thinking with the valium--I am also super claustrophobic and took lots of sedation first. By the time climbed in I was "floating". It makes a lot of noise, but that is just giant magnetic fields banging together. Ask if they can play some music, it helps.

hellymelly · 21/09/2012 11:11

an MRI of the head and neck is easier than one further down as they will just put your head and neck in, so you won't feel quite as confined as you would if all of you was inside the machine. The noise is fine, rather like a German experimental rock band cica 1984, but fine. I did feel very claustrophobic when i had mine (on my shoulder) but it only took about 15 minutes in the machine. My friend had a fan blowing through hers and a mirror so that she could see out, which she said made it much better, so your local hosp may have a similar system. (the machine is open both ends, but as you can't move your head you can't see out, and your face is quite close to the "roof" of the machine). She also had the operator chatting to her, which I would have found helpful. At least it is painless, you may feel an increase in heat (it heats you up by 1 degree ) at certain points, but if you are on valium you probably won't notice that at all! Best of luck.

mum4041 · 21/09/2012 12:40

Best of luck op.
