HELP my ds age 3 & 2 and myself have head lice YUK

Am really dismayed to find one DS with lice one with eggs and myself with lice. I have put lyclear on the boys tonight and something else on myself and hubby that we have to wash off tomorrow morning. I naively thought we will all be cured tomorrow but having read a bit about it it seems that may not be the case. Can anyone give any advice on getting rid of the little monsters and do you think pre-school will advise me to keep him at home tomorrow or not?

Most schools and pre schools accept that nits happen and allow children to attend. They're a fact of life, really, try not to worry. Combing with a nit comb and conditioner gets rid of them.

thanks www that sounds more reassuring. have done the combing tonight after the treatment so will wait and see how resilient they are. i don't know why but i always imagined they would be invisible to the eye or at least just detectable and being squeamish anyway when it comes to insecty things - i just felt like heaving when i saw these creatures....

I agree with www, part of life i'm afraid, continue with the conditioner and combing technique for a week or two, that'll sort it.

Wet combing with conditioner every 3 days for at least 2 weeks is the only way to be sure you are rid of them. IMO your children should not attend preschool again until they have been thoroughly combed - no application of any chemical can guarantee to kill all lice in one go. If they have been thoroughly combed, the only lice on their heads will be tiny ones unable to reproduce, and unborn ones in eggs, neither of which can travel to others' heads and pass on the infestation.

Good luck I know it is horrible, but make sure they have a good combing before going near any other children - or you could pass this distress on to another family.
