Would you fly with a child with chicken pox?

Chicken pox is going around like crazy at the moment. We are due to go on holiday on saturday morning and I am really not sure what to do if the spots come out!! There is only two children at the pre school who are yet to get it dd2 and another young boy. Another two cases have sprung up over this weekend!!

I am pretty sure she will be getting it its just when!

If the spots come out before saturday what would you do? Should we fly?

I have checked with the airline and they just need a doctors note to cover her.

gah- you neeed the last line under symptoms- can't catch shingles from chickenpox.

Twiglett · 19/03/2006 19:32

shingles are a stress reaction in a body that has previously had chicken pox .. you can't 'catch' them

LIZS · 19/03/2006 19:35

Do you have another child/children who may have been exposed and develop it before Saturday ?

allthegirls · 19/03/2006 19:38

no dd1 had it four years ago so should be ok as long as we have the ok from the doctor. the nhs direct says 5 days, whether they have to be a bit more strict if they know you will be in a confined space, i am not sure!!

all the girls as I said I know from experience of 2 airlines that won;t carry you - it is down to the airline I am afraid and nothing to do with the doctor!!

allthegirls · 19/03/2006 19:41

I have spoken the airline and they said they just need a doctors note!

LIZS · 19/03/2006 19:44

I'd ask them to send you that in writing. You may otherwise be faced with a real jobsworth at Check-in whether you have a note or not. Also Dubai can be strange about health issues so it might be worth checking they'll let you in !

allthegirls · 19/03/2006 19:49

Yeah thats a good idea! i will get my dad on the case out there to see if they will let us in. My mum works at a school there and they do have chicken pox so hopefully that side of things should be ok.

I will speak to the airline again now and get them to e mail me their policy.

I agree that the airline may not let you fly unless you can get written confirmation that your dd is no longer contagious. I also agree that is she was still contagious (I know she shouldn't be, but I'm speaking hypothetically here) and you took her on a plane, it would be quite selfish. If someone with immunity problems or other health problems, like my son, chickenpox can be vary dangerous (not the spots, but the accompanying fever, in my sons case). I would also never forgive myself if a pregnant woman came into contact with the virus.

I hope that you have some good luck with your dr tomorrow and that you will be able to go and enjoy your holiday.

joanna4 · 19/03/2006 20:27

My dd is 9 now she is only one in class who hasnt had it she also never caught it when her bro had it either.

FrannyandZooey · 19/03/2006 20:39

So you are saying that your dd came out in spots, 45 mins after you posted on here asking what to do if she came out in spots?

Shock

Are you psychic or did I miss something?

I'm confused about the contagion aspect Blush

dd had chicken pox when ds was about 5 weeks old. She was looked after by her Aunt for 3 days, when she came back she was at the 'scabby' stage. But ds got it about 2 weeks later - only about 7 spots though.

elastamum · 19/03/2006 21:01

This happened to us a few years back and we cancelled our holiday. The problem wasnt our first child but our second who caught it next. The insurance paid up no problem and we went away later in the year

HappyMumof2 · 19/03/2006 21:01

I think it's about 3 weeks, so he would have got it before she came out in the spots.

rickman · 19/03/2006 21:05

Allthegirls is definitely genuine, she is my sil. I was with her today and although she didn't have any spots when I left, my sil felt it was very likely to happen. So yes, she must be pyschic!!

FrannyandZooey · 19/03/2006 21:17

Like lockets said, they do often have symptoms before the spots come out, so I guess a mixture of that and mother's intuition could have done it. You have to admit it was a stretch to believe it though!

Hope she's soon better, allthegirls.

i rember when ds1 got chicken pox- he had woken up crying with a temp at 5.30am, i gave calpol and he went back to sleep ( he had no signs of the pox) , when i went in to check on him an hour later- he was covered in spots- i think once they come out, it can be quite rapid.
