Is this REALLY gallbladder problems? Please diagnose me!

I'm waiting for GP appointment (tomorrow). About 3 weeks ago I had a terrible pain in my upper right side which got worse and worse until in the end my husband called an ambulance! I was taken to hospital where I'm sure they thought I was having a heart attack to start with! Anyway, eventually they decided that it was biliary colic (?) and maybe passing a gallstone and I lay on a trolley in A&E all night with no relief (some pain relief but didn't work). Agony. By the morning it had subsided and they let me home. After that I had no problems and realise I should have gone to the GP but just kept putting it off as I'd seemed to have recovered. However, on Saturday night, we had a curry/beer and in the middle of the night, I had a similar attack - but not as bad - but it kept me up all night and eventually subsided. However, since then, I have had constipation (still haven't "been" since Sunday).... as well as intermittant aching pain in the same area - sometimes going around my ribs into the back. I can't lie on my right side at night as there is discomfort (not exactly pain). Can't wear tight fitting clothes around my tummy as it's really uncomfortable. I don't really want to eat anything. This morning, the pain has subsided but keeps coming and going very lightly. However, my problem this morning is that I woke up feeling really sick - since about 6am. Still feeling sick now despite trying to force down a bit of cereal.

Can all these problems - pain, nausea, constipation - all be the same thing?? Is it really my gallbladder do you think? Really fed up with feeling like this - obviously my GP will help but it's another whole day and a half.....

Thank you.

sounds like your gallbladder to me.

I had similar pain to you on and off for about a year and stupidly never did anything about it. I then had it continually for a week and still went to work, I decided enough was enough and went to the hospital through nhs 24 and was diagnosed with IBS.

2 days later I had to phone in sick for work as could barely move i was in so much pain and was sick 5 times in about 10 minutes. stabbing pains under my shoulder blade, severe bloating feeling at the top of my stomach. I was driven to hospital by a friend, x-rayed, hooked up to machines, questioned about the amount of alchohol i drank, basically told i was a liar because i don't really drink very often and probably hadn't drank for about 4 months.

After about 2 hours i was taken for a scan, which showed a massive gallstone and my gallbladder was 3 times the size it should have been and filled with poison, taken to surgery within in a few hours, while under GA, my gallbladder ruptured and instead of keyhole i have a slightly bigger scar at the top.

So yes it is possible, there was 3 other people on the ward waiting for an operation all with different symptoms.

thank you skyrocket. However, is constipation and nausea really linked to gall bladder problems? Thanks again.

Sounds like it to me too I'm afraid. I didn't have the constipation prior to removal but sure did after! Nausea is very common with gallbladder issues. Your doctor will tell you to immediately go onto a low/no fat diet which will be a complete pain (or it was for me!) but you will find this helps your symptoms considerably. However the ache never really went away for me until the thing was removed. For the nausea I highly recommend apple juice - I've only just discovered this relieve my post operative nausea and it really really does work. Good luck!

have you noticed your skin turning a bit yellow tinged ?

skyrocketsinflight · 18/09/2012 10:52

I don't know if its linked to be honest, just know i felt sick but wasn't when i previously had flare ups which i now know was linked to the gallbladder.

I didnt have constipation thou, the total opposite if you know what i mean Blush

also the low/no fat thing is a PITA, i have tried numerous things after and it does seem to help with pain but it seems no matter what i eat even now after its out, i have issues of the running fast to the toilet thing, which i am going to go and see about. Don't know if thats linked either.

Sounds like it to me, especially the nausea!

I puked so much I thought I was going to turn inside out.

Hopefully they can get you on a waiting list and you can have the blighter removed fairly soon. Gallstones are NOT fun
