Calpol question about doses

mum2sam · 19/03/2006 15:07

My ds (17mths) has been suffering really, really badly from teething. Hes not eating, really sleepy and very hot. Ive been giving him calpol for the last few days but it says on the box to consult your doctor if it execeeds over 3 days. Well we are in the 5th day and ds is still teething and in alot of pain is ok to still give him calpol until he is over the worst or should I go to the doctors.Ive been giving 5mls every 4hrs 2 times a day.

Still give calpol, as long as you are following the stated doses. If he's the same tomorrow, there is no harm in seeing the gp. Better to go and everything be fine, than not go, and he worsens.

I wouldn't exceed the stated dose no matter what. Why don't you phone NHS Direct and see if they advise that you go see your GP? I heard you can give Baby Nurofen at the same time as Calpol, but you can ask NHS Direct to confirm that.

bamboo · 19/03/2006 15:14

I was in A&E with DS on Friday and they gave him both Nurofen and paracetamol.

mum2sam · 19/03/2006 15:14

Ive been sticking to the recommended doses but obviously because hes got 4 back teeth coming through and they are taking their time hes still requiring pain relief. I could ring the health vistor i suppose. I was wondering whether you can give medised over a longer period of time all are they all the same.

I would still recommend seeing the GP/HV. And all paracetamol is the same. You just need to check the strength. But ALWAYS follow the instructions, unless told otherwise (by a GP). It is VERY dangerous.

colditz · 19/03/2006 15:22

I would ring NHS direct or a GP and put your mind at rest. And if the calpol is working, I wouldn't switch to Medised, unless he is really miserabl;e with lack of sleep.

You can give baby nurofen and calpol together, as long as you know your ds doesn't react negatively to the nurofen, but if I were you I would speak to someone medical first.

You can't give Medised and calpol together BTW, just in case you didn't know.

Lmccrean · 19/03/2006 15:26

was advised to give nurofen, then wait 2 hours, then give calpol..wait 2 more hours, then give nurofewn (unless its the 8 hr one of course) only really gave both in evening/night tho, and tried various teething things during the delay

colditz · 19/03/2006 15:29

Oh, does he still use a bottle or soft spouted beaker? Because I found filling a bottle with water and ice cubes gave my ds something to rub on his gums while taking fluids, it might be worth a try.

mum2sam · 19/03/2006 20:51

Thats a good idea colditz defin itely try that thanx

Are you sure that he is not going down with something else? Teething could be happening at the same time. In my experience, teething is unlikely to cause a temperature. Has he got any other symptoms?

Chapsmum · 19/03/2006 21:08

agree with jalopy, the reason that you should seek medical attention is because a temp which last longer than 3 days should really be investigated.

If ts just for teething pain that is a different matter.

dangirl · 20/03/2006 10:56

Agree. No temp due to teething.

Gloworm · 20/03/2006 11:03

just wanted to say our DS almost always had a high temp when teething.

although thats not to say that you son doesnt have a infection, perhaps take him to the gp for peace of mind?

sunandmoon · 20/03/2006 11:18

Mumsnet mum last week suggested that I went to see the GP. Our baby had high temp. (103/104). We thought she was teethingBlush. She had an ear infectionShock. Paracatemol and Orbifen during the day and Medised before bed time. She didn't have any temp during this w.e.. I am taking her again today to have her ears checked. SO my advice do go and see the GP.. THe GP mentionned that teething can cause fever too!
