scabs on head

i keep getting scabs on my head right on the top.
i pick them, they bleed then scab over again so i pick them again and cycle continues.
do i need to see a doctor ?? Had them for ages !

You should try changing your shampoo, sounds like your scalp doesn't like your current one. You should also see your GP as they could be caused by a fungal infection. Oh, and stop picking them!

I had this. Go to dr. I was given an anti fungal shampoo.. Which didn't work. I did a bit of research and tried bodyshop ginger anti dandruff shampoo.. This sorted it quickly.

i do swap shampoo's quite often, maybe a visit to the doctors and a visit to body shop me thinks.

i am now addicted to picking them.....note to self MUST STOP PICKING THEM !!

Head and Shoulders worked for me. My hair gets greasy, which doesn't help.

Watching with interest as I have exactly the same problem, including the picking, yuk! My hair needs a cut and colour but too embarrassed to go to the hairdressers and can't use home colour kits in case I have a reaction on the scabby areas :(

You could have something called Folliculitis - inflammation of the hair follicles. It can get infected. I would see a Dr. You will probably be prescribed some cream & a special shampoo.

I started a similar thread a couple of weeks ago on Style and Beauty and got lots of advice. The Body Shop ginger shampoo was recommended several times there but I can't vouch for it yet because I haven't got it yet (am abroad).

People also suggested coal tar shampoo. I went to the chemist here and got some over the counter stuff which is an antifungal treatment you use twice a week. I have tried that a few times now and had one go of coal tar (which is ehhhm aromatic!) I find the coal tar makes my hair very hard to brush after using - it is very drying. But my scalp is getting better slowly at the mo. Hope this helps.

My DSS2 gets a scabby scalp sometimes. I find that washing his hair myself, very meticulously, every day for a week clears it up a treat. Do you rinse your hair under a very strong jet of water in order to get all the shampoo out? Shampoo/conditioner left on the scalp with slightly dirty hair is a potent irritant.
