Pneumonia - anyone else struggle to get over it?

Was diagnosed with pneumonia over the summer and prescribed two courses of antibiotics, which seemed to sort it out pretty quickly. No need to go into hospital or anything like that. Had an x-ray a couple of weeks ago, which still showed something on one lung, but the radiologist thought I was fighting it off ok and didn't need antibiotics. However, it seems to have flared up again, as I now have a pain in my chest, am rattling away at night (the noise wakes DH up, so it must be bad) and have a sore throat. Weirdly, though, I don't feel ill! At least, not what I would call ill. I have felt much worse with a cold.

Anyway, I'm taking my third course of antibiotics - Doxycycline - and will go back to the doc again if they don't do the trick.

I just wondered if anyone else has had this with pneumonia and how they overcame it. I am hopeless at resting, mainly because I have a busy life with two children (one of whom has SNs and is home educated) and don't want to stop. If I felt ill, I could rest more, but I don't.

The main difference I have made to my life since being diagnosed is not drinking alcohol. I always enjoyed a glass or two of wine every night, but haven't wanted it at all since having pneumonia. The one time I drank a glass a week or so ago, I had a terrible coughing fit and haven't touched it again since.

Any fellow sufferers out there? How did you get better?

With time. I had pneumonia like you, never went into hospital but had several courses of antibiotics.

To be totally honest, it took a good year before the inflammation in my chest subsided and I stopped wheezing and having pain. I saw the respiratory nurse monthly for that period.

Try to get lots of rest, definitely stay off the booze as it will just deplete you of much needed vitamins, eat a good diet and lay off the fags Wink

A year? Oh dear, I hope it doesn't take me so long. I will definitely stay off the booze and I don't smoke. Am not so good at the good diet and the resting bit though. I think it's because, as I said, I don't feel really ill, although I am croaky and have pains in my chest now and again. It's obviously a difficult thing to shift. Thanks for replying, mumsknot.
