Eye drops over the counter for children?

Looks like DD1 has conjunctivitis again. I threw the gel we had last time out as I knwo you shouldn't keep it because of cross contamination.
Can I buy eye drops for a 4 year old over the counter?

Think we've had them for DD1 before.

I've used Brolene for my ds1. If you tell the pharmacist that it's for your dd they probably won't sell it to you though (because they would say you ought to have her seen by a doctor).

I know I should take her to the docs but atm she is too poorly to take out. Docs won't come to us :(

In fact, I've just checked the details for \link{http://emc.medicines.org.uk/emc/industry/default.asp?page=displaydoc.asp&documentid=11349\Brolene eye drops} and it doesn't say it can't be used for children (they always question who it's for though, and I always say it's just to keep in my first aid box). I have also noticed that the same company also makes Brolene eye ointment which is probably easier to get into the eye (I didn't know they did anything other than drops, will be getting the ointment next time).

dont know how old your dd is but you can buy OPTREX, infected eyes, eye drops over the counter, they contain chroramphenicol which is the usual drug of choice in conjunctivitis, they musnt be used for under 2;s though.

Dd had conjunctivitis recently, and doctor said most cases are viral anyway, so drops etc wouldn't do anything anyway - he said to leave it a couple of days, bathing in warm water and then if it didn't clear up to get AB eye drops.

tortoiseshell · 18/03/2006 17:18

If she's got a cold/snuffly etc then chances are it's viral!

if you think she has conjunctivitis you really should see your GP. It was really not a good idea to just leave it. I was at A & E with dd most of yesterday as her conjunctivitis was so bad and had spread to her throat & nose. She doesn't seem to respond to the standard drops so conjunctivitis is really not a good thing for her. My GP and the hospital doctors confirmed to me that her menengitis at 13wks was caused by conjunctivitis which did not clear properly. So please do get her treated quickly.

I bought some drops over the counter "Optrex Infected Eyes". Recommended by the pharmasist. DD had conjuntivitus. I couldnt get to the GP straight away. I did get an appt a day or two later and GP said to continue with the drops.
