Mirena trouble, what could this be? Any gynae nurses around?

I've had the Mirena coil for nearly two years now, I've wanted it taken out for about a year. I don't like the side effects, weight gain, spots, greasy skin and hair, unbelievable hair loss and thinning, loss of energy, not being able to ahem orgasm Blush.

Went to GP to have it taken out and she couldn't find the strings, referred to gynae and waited 8 months for any appointment. Went on Monday and they couldn't find it either Hmm. Its still there, but no strings could be found?

This is the worrying bit for me though, when the gynae put the speculum in it was agony, he wasn't particularly rough and I'm used to being examined, I've had 5 rounds of IVF! I also literally dripped blood when I stood up and it was all over the bed, which really shocked me?

He then said I'd got a discharge which was news to me, I've had no symptoms, not felt unwell, nothing in my knickers etc. So now I'm worried, I personally think its just ovulation stuff? Although I have had a look and its brownish in colour, doesn't smell?

I've phoned my GP for the results and they are not back, so no idea what it could be?

Also yesterday afternoon I had the most horrendous stomach cramps, and was literally bent over double. I've since been very tender and my stomach is extremely painful to touch, it wasn't like this before they prodded around on Monday, is this a normal reaction?

The gynae also completely refused to believe my symptoms were caused by the Mirena. He dismissed them all and said I was just 'presuming' it was that. I asked him why I never had any of it before the Mirena and he said its my age!! (43)

I'm also worried about whether now they have had a good poke around if its still working and if it may have been dislodged which is causing the pain. I use it as contraception so don't want to get pregnant?

So basically, if I want the Mirena out, I've got to have an op to get it out, I hate generals so I'm stuck with it for now?

Any ideas what's going on and has anyone had similar trouble?

I had mine put in on the recommendation of my dr. I felt depressed pretty much straight away. I'm always one to get a bit low. But this was different. I couldn't do anything. I just used to sit. And look at the mess the piles of washing - but I couldn't do it. It was a really strange feeling - something I'd never encountered before or since. i can't describe it. But I felt completely broken. I asked for it to be taken out but they couldn't find the strings.

I had several scans, probe scans etc. Two gynaecologists said it definitely wasn't there any more. i knew it was because my periods had stopped and I felt almost suicidal. After six months of being prodded and poked, it was eventually taken out under general anaesthetic.

It was a real pain because we had to get to the hospital for 8am in the morning (which is not easy if you have kids needing to get to school), I had to have supervision for the rest of the day and then I had to have a week off work to recover.

But I'm soooo glad it's out.

Call me cynical but I think either drs are being given commission to sell these things. Or that they're saving a lot of money for the NHS - by that I mean people are having hysterectomies for heavy periods because of the Mirena coil. A lot of women are saying on sites like these that they have problems with them - but the health service doesn't seem to be listening.

You need to ask them to x ray you as it sounds as though it's not where it should be. I've seen x rays where coils have managed to get themselves into the abdominal cavity (not in the uterus), which does require surgery. They need to make sure that it's there, not just say it's there.
