health screening advice wanted

Hi, DH and I are older parents and following the death of my father recently DH is becoming a bit twitchy about the sorts of illnesses that strike as we all get older (like my Dad he was 40 when we had our first child). In addition, he is not in contact with his biological father so doesn't know what genetic inheritance might be coming his way. Does anyone know of any health screening that can be done that can pick up precursors to various things like cancers, parkinsons, alzheimers, heart disease, diabetes etc. I'm guessing this wouldn't be an NHS thing, but you never know. I hope this doesn't come over as neurotic, but he does seem to have a bit of a bee in his bonnet at the moment and I wondered if the chance to find some of these things out (whether negative or positive) might give him some control/peace of mind.

There are some things they can screen for, and some they can tell you your future risk for, and some things you can't.

Your GP may offer a well man checkup, and if he wanted more than that, the BUPA health assessments are good.

Thanks - He's going to ring the Drs and see what they cover in their health checks locally. It's also useful to know that you rate the BUPA assessments.

You can get a health check from the NHS via your Gp www.nhs.uk/Planners/NHSHealthCheck/Pages/NHSHealthCheck.aspx I've had one.

My dh has a BUPA check (paid for by work) every 2 years and it is more thorough than the NHS one.
