blue hands and mouth - reassurance please

dd, 11 months, has had d & v this week. Today she's drank and eaten ok and her temp is normal. However, her hands keep going blue and are cold. She seems to get this alot and the gp doesn't seem to suggest anything. Now her lips are blue. They can often do this too but not quite so blue as just now. Her lips went blue when she had a 'rigal' (sp) kind of fit a few weeks ago.

I've googled and apparently blue hand can be normal in a young baby but everytime it happens it worries me, especially with the blue lips.

Has anyone elses young baby had this and have their gp/hv offered reassurance?

I feel like such a neurotic mum as dd has had one thing after another since Jan, poor thing and i'm fed up Sad

when she had the fit was her temp up? my dd1 has had 2 fits brought on by high temps

i think blue hands are quite common in small babies, but not blue lips

have you put lots of layers of clothes on her (if you think shes cold)

see if that works

can you check her temp?

is she breathing ok? ie not struggling or wheezy or anything

it is a worry i know

it seems to happen alot, more so since the fit. That was due to a high temp, she had a urine infection which shes on anti-b's for. I think i'll put another layer on her. Her temp is normal at the moment. She's had the d & v since Saturday and though she's hydrated, she's barely eaten since then so that probably doesn't help. I just need to know that others have had it and it's normal, I'll still worry though probably. Thanks.

Could be a sign of poor circulation/oxygen intake or , more likely since she's had d and v , dehydration. Either way I'd suggest you get her checked.

while her lips and hands are blue is she alert and awake?

if so i wouldnt worry

do you have a nice HV? you could ask her to pop round and see dd

hi delgirl

agree re blue hands - dd seemed to have this a lot when she was a small baby. however, the blue lips sound more worrying. i think i would get her checked out.

hope she is ok.

i dont know whether i should tell you this but when my dd1 was about 17 mths she was lying in my arms, her lips and hands went blue and she stopped breathing, was unconscious. dh had to call an ambulance and i had to give her CPR Sad

the docs at the hospital said she had very thick mucus from her cold and it had just totally blocked her airways

(she had come round in the ambulance with an o2 mask btw)

just keep an eye on her breathing

DelGirl · 17/03/2006 13:39

I will, thanks. She is fairly happy and chatty and if her hands & lips weren't blue (they aren't now) I wouldn't be concerned.

Big sigh, I think i'll give the hv a ring. Mine only works 2 days a week and I don't call them usually but dd has been to the docs almost every other week since Jan, twice in one week sometimes and they must think i'm neurotic!

My youngest always goes blue when she is cold and she is 10! She used to go seriously blue when she she was a baby, but it has never gone away. The doctor said that she just had poor circulation. She gets blue lips and hands. However, if she was 11 months old I would DEFINITELY have her checked by the doctor.

I was so stupid when she was tiny - I nearly ignored the fact that she had meningitis because I didn't want to disturb the doctors. So I don't give a tuppenny toss now what doctors think, I just take them.

lolliepops · 17/03/2006 14:36

my dd had this when she was younger blue hands, feet and lips sometimes. I was always told not to worry its just imature circulation and she will grow out of it and she did.

well, the extra layer seemed to do the trick as well as a warm bottle of milk. No blue hands or lips since yesterday when I posted Smile. I remember the paed in the hospital saying its a way of a virus coming out when their lips go blue sometimes. Not quite sure how/why but thats what he said. I left a message on the hv's answerphone yesterday but no-one has got back to me yet.
